Wood Stoves For Cooking And Heating
By Jennifer Bowers
Wood burning stoves are described as appliances that are either
cooking stoves or a heat source. The new wood stoves are clean
burning and most of them have high heating efficiency ratings.
At one time, a stove was not able to be placed near any walls,
almost always located towards the center of a room. However, now
there are some models that can be set as close as 8" to a
wall.
The wood fuel stoves sometimes referred to as fireplaces stoves,
come in many different styles, ranging from traditional looking
to contemporary. The three major materials that they are made
from include plate steel, iron and sheet metal; at times a mixture
of all three may be used.
Altering Conventional Cast Iron Stoves
Some of the manufacturers alter the look of the more conventional
cast iron stoves by using different types of material on the outer
surface. Many times enamel, porcelain and marble are used in a
wide range of different colors to change the appearance.
Up to 1/4" plates are first cut and then stamped in order
to make the steel plate that many of these stoves are made of.
The cast iron wood stoves are usually made from the cast parts
that get bolted together.
Detailed Lines and Grain Free Surface
There is not a major difference between the steel and cast iron
stoves, as both normally include detailed lines along with grain
free surfaces. That makes it easier to make your decision based
on your budget, design and size.
Many times it is easy to tell whether or not wood burning stoves
are well crafted by looking for tight doors, smooth welds, clean
castings and draft controls that are smooth operating. Of course
attention to detail and good workmanship are always important.
Most of them have metal plates or fire-bricks to help prevent
burnout.
Increase The Life Of The Stoves
All of these materials help to increase the life of the stoves
and even the thermal mass to some extent. Even after a fire has
burned out, wood fireplaces/stoves that weigh 500 lbs. radiate
heat for several more hours.
If you are buying one of the wood stoves to install in a house
that hasn’t had one before, then you will need to have a chimney
installed, which naturally involves cutting a hole in the roof.
Also, if you plan to use a chimney that is already in place, then
be sure the stove that you are thinking about buying is compatible
with it.
Even when using a pre-existing chimney it is likely that it will
have to be relined with steel, in order for it to operate correctly
using the newer stoves that are being produced now.

Did You Know This About Pellet Stoves?
How do I care for my pellet stove?
Pellet stoves have a lot of intricate parts
so you will have to maintain these parts if you want to have a
stove that is in good working order. The first thing you should
do is always keep the flue clean and free from accumulated debris.
You may have to hire someone to do this
for you if you are afraid of the mess. Be warned: it can be a
huge mess cleaning a stove. If the place that you purchased your
pellet stove offers a maintenance contract, definitely take it
out. It will save you a lot of time and energy later should something
go wrong or if it simply needs routine maintenance.
