Wine Cellars Blending With Your Furniture

By Barry J Smallhorn

If you want to get technical, it’s actually a misnomer to refer to refrigerated cabinets for storing wine as wine cellars. A cellar is a room underground that is indeed used for storing wine but is even more often used for food.

A proper wine cellar concentrates solely on maintaining the best conditions for the aging and storing of wine. But this function has moved upstairs in recent years and brought the phrase with it, naming appliances designed with the same purpose as the original cellars.

In many cases, these wine storage refrigerators have become pieces of furniture in their own right.

Become Part Of The Furniture

Some of these wine cellars both look and function like refrigerators, so as pieces of furniture they fit best into a kitchen setting, with perhaps a stretch into the dining room depending on how decorative they are. Some are freestanding while others are built into cabinetry in the same way as a dishwasher.

Avanti, Danby and Haier are known for this sort of fridge. Yet even in a kitchen setting, the surfaces of these wine storage coolers can be designed to match the decor of the kitchen itself. So you’ll find them in brushed steel or laminates, or sometimes encased in wood that matches the cabinetry.

Looking Like Cabinets

However, it’s when you find these refrigerated cabinets looking indeed like cabinets, which may be in upright or credenza styles that the "furniture" aspect really comes into its own.

Being larger units, they sometimes hold many hundreds of bottles of wine, so they are favored by those with serious collections. These wine cellars are usually crafted from polished wood with ornate tinted glass doors.

Americave and Vinotheque both have several different collections from credenza size to cabinets resembling armoires. You can also review your options and find furniture like the Edgemont Wine Cellar Tower, with an 18-bottle fridge in the base and a display area above, where wine glasses are hung from the upper level.

Bringing Wine Storage Upstairs And Blending With The Decor

Wine cellars have come a long, long way since they began as cave-like rooms underground. Having now brought the storage of wine upstairs, the new refrigerated cellars have developed into pieces of furniture that can be admired not just for their function but also for their form.

They are no longer merely utilitarian, even if they continue to store wine safely for long periods. Now they blend with the decor of any room, and stand proudly with all other essential furniture in the home.

Did You Know?

Many people do not consider a meal to be complete without a nice bottle of wine. Wine can be extremely relaxing and can also lead to an enjoyable hobby. You can collect various wines and let them age properly.

But the key is knowing how to store your wine to prevent it from souring or changing in flavor. Those that have lots of money can build a wine cellar but the easiest way is to invest in wine refrigerators. They keep your wine at the perfect temperature and you can count on each bottle being perfect.
