Top Health Foods Are More Expensive To Reduce Demand

By Julia Taylor-Fernandez

Top health food, including organic food, is often more expensive than regular food, due to the bigger effort required to grow these foods, without chemical pesticides and other chemicals.

These are the facts. There may be an increasing demand for healthy food, but the supply is relatively low and the production cost is relatively high. As a result, top health foods are a luxury meant for those who can afford the higher prices.

In urban United States, low income vegetarians cannot afford the high cost of fresh fruit and vegetables. As more people are turning away from junk food and fast food, they are increasing the demand for fresh fruit and vegetables, with producers increasing the prices to lower the demand.

Supply Of Healthy Foods Not Meeting The Demand

As the demand for top health foods is outstripping supply, the few farmers and producers cannot meet the demand from consumers. Then, there is the problem of storage, as most top health foods are organic, are therefore highly perishable and best consumed fresh from the farm, as quickly as possible.

This makes these foods very expensive, when they are out of season. For example, fruit and vegetables can only grow in specific climates around the world and then only at certain times of the year, when there are the most favourable conditions.

Cannot Meet Ongoing Demand For Out Of Season Food

Normally these climate zones are far away from your home, and although they are grown only in a few months of the year, the demand is continuous.

There are companies that try to keep up with the demand for top health foods, but they incur chunky costs when they purchase large air conditioners that blow a hole in their budgets, particularly when major maintenance is needed.

Higher Production Costs Are Passed On To Consumers

This results in companies passing on such expenses on these products, when they are sold into the market, increasing the costs for consumers.

For example, according to a national poll by the Heart And Stroke Foundation of Canada, almost half of Canadians said they will not buy fresh and healthy foods due to the high cost. The study showed that 47% of Canadians do not buy fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and wholegrain products, lean meat or fish because of the higher cost.

Nutritionists And Dietitians Increasing The Demand For Healthy Food

These days, dietitians and nutritionists are recommending to their clients, to eat more fresh and healthy food. This has escalated the demand for top health foods, because people are always looking for ways to control, monitor, limit or prevent an undesirable medical condition, by improving their nutrition and eating healthy food.

Some people are now ready to review your options and pay top prices for expensive food in order to avoid costly hospital bills down the track. This a perfect solution for those who can afford healthy food, what about those who cannot afford to pay higher prices for top health foods?
