Thanksgiving Holiday With Better Travel Plans

By Imogen T Stubbs

Both individuals and families spend their Thanksgiving holiday in any number of ways, but by far, Thanksgiving Day customs dictate that it is spent with family and friends.

For some, this may include having to travel some distance and just like with any other holiday, it can be quite draining on the pocketbook. This can be especially hard for those who are on a budget, but there are some things that you can look for in order to make it a little more affordable.

Students may be the ones on the tightest budgets but you may not realize that many places actually have discounted student air fare; just go online and type in student airfares and there are a number of companies that will show up.

Discounted Prices For Traveling On Thanksgiving

Many of them have very discounted prices for Thanksgiving travel, so they won’t have to spend Thanksgiving in a lonely dormitory.

Another way to help ensure that you will end up spending the Thanksgiving holiday exactly where you want to is by driving to a different airport. Many times driving an extra 100 miles to a smaller airport will result in a less expensive ticket.

Or, you may want to consider flying standby. Simply pack and go to the airport and ask if the plane has an empty seat. You may get a seat at a reduced price and make it home in time for your family’s Thanksgiving celebrations.

Discount Travel Sites Online

Recently, there have been many discount travel sites popping up on the Internet, and some strictly offer to find the lowest fare available, helping you to make it home for that family tradition of a huge Thanksgiving gathering.

Others may offer more of a discount if you include such things as a rental car or hotel room. Still others even allow you to make your own offer, which if accepted, can certainly be an affordable way to get to where you are going so you can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends.

Traveling By Train And Bus

If you have to travel, but are not looking forward to all of the hassles involved with traveling by air, you can still make it home for the Thanksgiving holiday by taking advantage of the other options available.

Traveling by train can be quite convenient and enjoyable, and can reduce the stress of holiday travel. If you have the time, then taking the bus or driving your own car are certainly other modes to consider, yet because Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year, highways can become quite congested.

Whichever mode of transportation you choose, plan ahead and you will make it there in time for that wonderful Thanksgiving Day feast.

Did You Know?

What types of foods are served at Thanksgiving?
The types of food served at Thanksgiving vary depending on where you are at. In the Southern United States you will often find cornbread dressing, roast turkey, sweet potatoes with marshmallows and pecan pies served. In the Northern United States you may find ham, stuffing and a cranberry salad.

The dishes vary as widely as the ethnicities that serve them. Different families have different Thanksgiving traditions that they uphold. So you may find deviled eggs, fruit pies, cornbread, deer/venison or even chicken being served.

For those brave folks you can always serve a Turducken. Though it sounds funny it is actually a turkey stuffed with a duck that is stuffed with a chicken and stuffing. Each year it grows in popularity so it may not be long before you are serving it at your next Thanksgiving Day dinner.
