Strawberry Shortcake With Fresh Strawberries

By Patricia Gorginas

Strawberry shortcake is a delicious dessert, given after a main meal. There are not many excuses to give out something so delicious, as something that includes fresh strawberries, especially when strawberries are in season. I slice my strawberries, from my own organic garden, freshly picked on the day of cooking.

When my strawberry patch is full of strawberries, there are not many excuses I need to find, to make a number of delicious desserts with strawberries. If strawberries are out, then I use strawberry syrup, which is always available at my favourite gourmet food store.

Whenever there is a family special event, I always like to make my familys’ favourite dessert, the delicious strawberry shortcake.

Mixing Light Cake, Strawberries And Whipped Cream

One of my favorite desserts is strawberry shortcake, and it has been since I was a child. There is something delicious about the mix of light cake, strawberries, and whipped cream that most children and many adults love.

Growing up, we only had it one way, and that was always fine with me. However, I have since learned that there are many ways to enjoy this dessert and most of them are just as good, if not better, than the original that I loved as a child.

Shortcake Is The Most Popular Option

Most use shortcake when they make this dessert, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to. You can substitute many sorts of cake and you will find that many of them taste amazing. We have tried many, and my favorites were angel food cake and pound cake.

Both have a decidedly different texture, and each changes the taste of the entire dessert. It might depend on if you want a lighter version or a more luxurious strawberry shortcake. You may even find that regular white or yellow cake mix can work well for this as well.

Using Fresh Strawberries For A Healthier Cake

You can also go a few different ways with your fruit for your strawberry shortcake. You can get the strawberries that come in a syrup, as many of them do, or you can simply slice or even chop fresh strawberries when you want something a bit lighter and a bit healthier.

Though it technically wouldn’t be called strawberry shortcake any longer, you can use other types of fruit if you wish. I have made the same thing with blueberries and blackberries, and the dessert was still a hit with my family. What you use may very well depend on the time of year.

Reducing Calories With Unsweetened Whipped Cream

You can also keep the sugar down if you think of different toppings for your strawberry shortcake dessert. One of the most common ways to top this dessert is to use whipped cream. You can make your own whipped cream with heavy whipping cream and Splenda to save some calories, or you can go with just the cream in an unsweetened form.

You may also find other things you can drizzle on the top like chocolate syrup, or you can sprinkle powered sugar over the top as well. You can find even more great varieties of strawberry shortcake in newer recipe books or by looking at cooking web sites you can find on the Internet.

Making A Dessert For Family Dinner Parties

When the time comes for a family celebration like a birthday or a graduation, we always like to offer a dessert of strawberry shortcake, after the main meal. We also make a second smaller cake and offer the low calorie version to satisfy those on a low calorie diet. Quiet often, both cakes are eaten rather quickly and none is left over for the next day, especially when we have invited guests.

I have been asked for my secret recipe, but I just write it down and tell them it is a very basic recipe, with no real complications and easy to make your own adjustments by adding more ingredients. One time, I did not have enough fresh strawberries, so I added some shredded walnuts, to makeup for the difference and it tasted just as delicious.

As long as you use the main ingredients of light cake, strawberries and whipped cream, there should be no limits on additional ingredients to make strawberry shortcake.

What are the kitchen basics I need?
Kitchen basics that every kitchen should have are pots and pans (in a variety of sizes), measuring cups, measuring spoons, mixing bowls and an assortment of kitchen gadgets that make life easier.

One of these gadgets is a can opener. Being forced to saw off the bottom of a can could take a little of the fervor away from cooking. Also consider keeping whisks, spatulas and tongs as part of your cooking basics.

Another item basic that is used often is a drainer/strainer. These can come in the form of bowls or be part of a boiling pan set. It is used to drain spaghetti water from the pasta or can be used for anything similar.
