Seafood Markets And Choosing Quality Food

By Barry J Smallhorn

Seafood markets can create a lot of uncertainty in the average consumer. How can you tell if the fish and seafood they offer is fresh? What are the signs of a fresh lobster? It’s not too hard to determine the signs when you use your sense of touch, sight and smell. You will be able to find the highest quality fish for the best taste experience for you and your family. To help you decide on the freshest choices, take a look at these helpful tips.

All fresh seafood should be kept at 32 F. That can be maintained through refrigeration and/or ice. Fresh fish should be cold to the touch, not cool or room temperature. Always avoid seafood that has been in a display case for long periods, even if it is on ice. If you are not sure, then ask the seafood market vendor how long it has been around and whether or not there are more to choose from.

Choosing Your Fresh Fish

The skin of whole fresh fish should have a moist, firm and shiny appearance, while the flesh should spring back when pressed gently with the finger. They will have eyes that are bright, full and clear and may often protrude but are never sunken.

Look for a firm body and shiny gills while also making sure there are no dark blemishes on the skin. Obviously, you should avoid fish with dull-colored gills that are gray, brown or green or if it appears to be slimy.

Finding Quality Lobster And Crabs

Live lobster and crabs, as well as fresh or frozen fish are all sold at seafood markets. It varies as to whether the animal is alive or dead when purchased. If they have been refrigerated, then lobsters and crabs will not be very active, but they should move a little bit. The shell of crabs and live lobsters should be hard, while the shell of a soft-shelled crab will be soft. Cooked lobsters or crabs still in the shell should be bright red in color and have no odor.

Seafood markets allow you many fresh fish seafood choices. Choose only enough for use within one day or at the most, a couple of days. They don’t keep long enough to store in the refrigerator. Freeze what you don’t plan on using right away.

Remember to choose fish that are free of blemishes and have firm flesh that springs back when touched. It should have a slight seawater smell, but not be overly fishy smelling. Just by using your senses, you can take home the freshest fish the market has to offer.
