Save Money On Organic Food By Buying From Local Suppliers And Growing Your Own Food
By Julia Taylor-Fernandez
Save money on organic food by growing your own food and buying
organic food from local businesses and local farmers markets.
Buying from local suppliers helps save on transportation costs,
reducing the cost of organic food.
When you walk into a food store, you may notice the prices on
organic food are always higher than products grown without organic
practices. If you want to eat food, grown with the use of insecticides,
herbicides and other chemicals, then you will pay less, as it
is easier to grow produce treated with these chemicals.
You can take steps to reduce costs of your organic food by growing
your own fruit, vegetables and herbs and buying from local organic
food suppliers.
Save Money By Growing Your Own Organic Produce
The cheapest method has got to be to grow your own. The great
thing is that it doesn’t require you to have much garden space,
or even a garden at all! We grow tomatoes, and strawberries in
containers and the extra benefit is that you get total control
over the growing conditions.
The best combination is to have organic soil together with organically
produced seeds or plants, that way you ensure you get the full
flavour and benefit. Containers can be placed anywhere that receives
a reasonable amount of daylight, which means that you can use
them on balconies or other hard surfaces.
Support Local Business By Buying Organic Food Locally
One of the most satisfying things to do is to buy organic food
locally. That way you get the freshest ingredients for your kitchen
and also get to support local businesses. With no transportation
costs for the supplier too, you should get very competitive prices.
Don’t forget that these same businesses will be employing local
staff so you are also helping the local economy, everybody wins
in this scenario.
Local Markets With Local Suppliers On One Location
We visit a big monthly market held on a disused airstrip. Organic
food is just one of the variety of items sold there but the prices
are very, very good indeed. Of course they are all local suppliers
and with several of them in one place, we benefit from healthy
competition and get to sample a lot of fruit!
Join An Organic Box Scheme
If you are unable to get out of your house or are too busy working
to select your groceries by hand, then why not subscribe to an
organic box scheme?
You will receive, delivered to your door, a weekly selection
of fruit and vegetables in season.
Farm Shops And Farmers Markets
Finally, investigate whether any farms near you, are operating
an organic farm shop. Our local one is operated on an open farm
so that you can go and see where the animals are being kept and
take a look at the crops being grown.
They actually have a well-designed walking route around the farm
which makes a nice day out for the kids too.
If you investigate the options above you should be able to make
considerable savings whilst you and your family sample the delights
and advantages of organic food.
A Farmers Market In Your Local Area
Now that you know about your options to reduce costs for organic
food, now is the time to act. If you do not have the time grow
your own herbs, fruit and vegetables, then visiting a farmers
market in your local area, selling organic produce, may be the
next best option.
If you want to reward yourself with the better tasting fruit
and vegetables, then you may look at growing a small number of
plants in a small area of your yard, where there is plenty of
sunshine and the soil is not heavy with clay. If your soil has
too much clay, you may look at changing the soil in your garden.
Placing Food Scraps In Compost Bins
You may also look at recycling food scraps and other green waste
like leaves and grass and place them in compost bins. You can
buy compost bins at many nurseries and other garden stores.
If you do not have room to place compost bins in your yard, you
can buy organic compost to use in your garden. With an organic
garden, your aim is to avoid using fertilizers and insecticides
full of nasty chemicals.
Keeping Out Pests From Your Organic Garden
There are organic fertilizers to help plant growth and natural
bug killers that do not use nasty chemicals to help reduce infestations
in your garden. These days, you can even use ladybugs to eat insects
in your garden and electronic gadgets to frighten pests away from
your organic garden.
Taking action by growing your own food, is one of the better
options to save money on organic food.

Did You Know?
What are the kitchen basics I need?
Kitchen basics that every kitchen should have are
pots and pans (in a variety of sizes), measuring cups, measuring spoons,
mixing bowls and an assortment of kitchen gadgets that make life easier.
One of these gadgets is a can opener. Being forced to saw off
the bottom of a can could take a little of the fervor away from
cooking. Also consider keeping whisks, spatulas and tongs as part
of your cooking basics.
Another item basic that is used often is a drainer/strainer.
These can come in the form of bowls or be part of a boiling pan
set. It is used to drain spaghetti water from the pasta or can
be used for anything similar.
