The Safe Drinking Water Act Of 1974: Ensuring A Safe Water Supply
By Imogen T Stubbs
Safe Drinking Water Act protects your source water, making it
safe to drink. You probably take this legislation for granted
and will continue to do so until something happens to your drinking
water.
Every moment of every day the Environmental Protection Agency
is working diligently to protect the US environment from pollution,
pesticides and other waste products. Most people are not even
aware that there are laws governing the local water supplier.
Take the time to learn about the laws and you will know how you
are protected.
In 1974, the Environmental Protection Agency passed the Safe
Drinking Water Act. It was an important piece of legislation that
guaranteed American citizens safe food and drink. This Act gave
the EPA the right to enforce their standards for drinking water.
Assurance Water Is Safe From Contaminants
It was, and still is, an important issue with the public. They
want to be assured that their water supplies are kept safe from
contaminants. They do this by enforcing two different parts to
their regulations and laws governing water supplies.
A 15 member committee set the laws and standards that drinking
water must meet. There are two parts to the regulation and laws.
One is the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation and the
second is the National Secondary Drinking Water Regulation. The
drinking water standards apply to any public water source being
pumped to at least twenty-five people.
It does not cover well water. If you do have water that comes
from a well, then you will need to test the water yourself in
order to determine if it is safe for consumption. One way to ensure
this is to make sure your waste from your home is no where near
your water source.
Public Water Systems Usually Follow Both Sets Of Guidelines
It is your responsibility to know how the Safe Drinking Water
Act helps you. While one part is enforceable by the law, the other
is simply a guideline. For the most part, public water systems
follow both sets of guidelines to ensure that people are happy
with the quality of their water.
A glass of dingy water may not be the best thing for advocating
the use of tap water versus products from the bottled water industry.
But thanks to these laws you can drink your glass of clear water
and know that you are helping the environment by not buying plastic
bottles that may be filled with tap water anyway.

Did You Know?
Is well water safe?
Well water can be just as safe as bottled
water or tap water. It will have a different taste though because
all of the impurities such as lime that are found naturally occurring
in water. Some people actually prefer the taste of well water to that
of tap or bottled because of that "hard" water taste.
Unfortunately hard water is really rough on sinks, toilets, bathtubs,
showers and hot water heaters with the lime scale buildup. The
solution is to buy a water purification system and softening system
to remove the impurities.
