Recipes For Baby Food With Fresh And Nutrient Rich Ingredients

By Julia Taylor-Fernandez

Introducing your baby to solid food can be a lot of fun if you choose to make your own baby food. Not only will your baby enjoy being introduced to wonderful new flavors, but you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that the meals are made with fresh, nutrient rich ingredients.

You don’t have to be a gourmet cook either. There are lots of terrific recipes for baby food available for free on the Internet.

Before you get started making your delicious baby food recipes, review your options and make sure that all of your tools are immaculately clean. A baby’s developing digestive system can’t fend off bacteria that are harmless to adults, so it’s essential for everything that will come in contact with the food is sterile.

Clean Everything With Hot Water And Antibacterial Soap

This includes knives, cutting boards, counters, bowls, and pots and pans. Cleaning dishes and utensils in a dishwasher is preferable but hot water and antibacterial soap will do the job.

Before you start cooking, wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap. Cross contamination is a big culprit with bacteria, so watch out for places where it may lurk. Plastic cutting boards can hide bacteria in cracks even after washing.

Contaminated meat can transfer bacteria to vegetables through a dirty knife, bowl and even your hands. Scrub vegetables thoroughly and cook meat until it is well done to kill bacteria.

Babies Love The Taste And Texture Of Fruit And Vegetable Purees

Fruit and vegetable purees make the ideal recipes for baby food because babies love the taste and texture. They’re also very easy to make. You can find a variety of fresh baby food recipes online but it’s best to start with a single-ingredient puree then move on to combinations of 2 or 3 ingredients.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are preferable but frozen is good too. Stay away from canned produce because it often contains lots of extra salt and sugar. The canning process also drains the fruits and veggies of their nutrients.

Making Your Vegetable Puree

To make an easy vegetable puree you’ll need a 1/2 lb of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato, and squash or zucchini. Wash the vegetables thoroughly and cut into small pieces with a clean knife.

You can boil the veggies to soften them but steaming them in a colander retains more of the nutrients. When the veggies are tender, blend them to a puree using some of the cooking liquid.

To save time, combine making fresh infant food with cooking your own meals. Many of the ingredients are the same, so it’s a great time saver.

Meat And Veggies For Your Growing Baby

For a healthy baby meal of meat and veggies, you’ll need 1/2 cup cooked beef or chicken that has been cut into small pieces, 2 tablespoons of cooked vegetables like carrots, peas, spinach, celery or squash, 1/2 up of milk or formula, and a 1/2 of cooked rice.

As you can see, these are all ingredients that you would use to make a meal for an adult. Put all of the ingredients into a blender and puree. Voila! You now have a meat and veggie dish that is delicious and healthy. Freeze the extra servings for use later on.

Be Creative As You Gain Experience

There are lots of free recipes for baby food online so print out your favorite ones and make your own cookbook. As you become more comfortable with making fresh baby food, experiment with different ingredients and meals.

You can even make sweet baby desserts! Discovering different delicious foods is fun for your baby, so be creative and make the experience of eating one that you share with your child.
