Nationwide Organic Food Delivery System

By Jane K Hawker

Organic food delivery can be a tricky operation. With the demands that fresh organic food brings, including customer and retail stores, farmers are beginning to have a problem getting deliveries to the right places on time.

The organic food market is becoming larger and larger and with this increase in demand, the revenues that the business is generating are at an all time high. However, organic food delivery may hinder the organic food market’s rise.

Organic food companies are becoming a permanent fixture on the retail market. The different companies selling organic food include nationwide chains, internet stores and local farmers markets. With local markets, the organic food delivery system breakdown is not as prevalent.

Internet Organic Food Stores

The internet stores most often come directly from a farm, so many of them are not experiencing as much of an impact. However, the retail stores that are out in the market are seeing a decrease in sales.

Since organic food uses no preservatives, the organic food delivery system makes it harder for the produce to get to stores on time before a breakdown of product begins. As retail stores are forced to turn away bad produce and products, the affect on farmers dependent upon the revenues becomes dire.

The breakdown of the organic food delivery system is beginning to impact the revenues of both the local farmers and the grocery store chains. Because of the lack of consistency with the farmers, the grocery stores are not being able to provide consumers with an adequate supply of organic food.

Not Enough Food Inspectors To Keep Up With Demand

Another issue hurting the natural and organic food supply is that there are simply not enough certified food inspectors available currently to keep up with the demand. As consumers begin experiencing shortages and higher costs and turn to other sources for products, the loss of revenue leads to a cycle of ruin for farmers and the organic food industry and prices begin to climb steadily higher.

The organic food delivery system can stand to have improvements made. Due to the demand on the retail markets, farmers are having trouble keeping up their supply. The revenues that organic food generates is growing dramatically.

The organic food delivery system needs to have some sort of consistency to make sure the supply coming from the farms is able to keep up with customer demand. If this supply issue is taken care of the organic food market will continue to grow and generate more revenue for both farmers and retail markets.

Did You Know?

What price do consumers pay for organic foods?
Organic foods are higher in price in grocery stores than those that are not. Farmers must make more per pound than their competitors due to losing more crops to outside forces than the conventional farmer will.

How do organic foods affect the land?
Since organic farmers do not use the conventional pesticides to rid their crops of blight, or in the case of animal farmers not using antibiotics or growth hormones, larger plots of land must be used. They must plant more crops to account for the loss from disease or insects.

How does the USDA determine what constitutes organic food?
There is actually a very complex method to determine if a farmer or co-op can market their foods as organic.

A division of the United States Department of Agriculture analyzes the composition of the land, record keeping, and a documentation of any herbal or chemical pesticides used on the plant, vegetable, fruit or animal. After passing the certification to label the farm as "organic" the farmer can then be free to use the USDA Organic seal on its produce.

Do all farmers have to have USDA seal of approval to label their foods organic?
No. Only farmers seeking certification through the USDA have the right to label their foods organic. If a non-organic grower markets their product as organic, huge fines can be given.
