New Years Eve Party For Kids With Activities And Entertainment Ideas

By Katerina Octanova

More than half of youngsters ages 7 to 16 want to spend New Year’s Eve with their parents, found a 2000 British survey conducted by the Coventry Evening Telegraph.

They found that 67% of 12 to 13 year olds wanted to spend time with mom and pop, while 65% of 10 to 11 year olds wanted to hang with the family. Similarly, a 2006 Boys & Girls Clubs survey of 1,500 boys and girls in the US discovered that 78% of those surveyed said they "do not get enough meaningful time with their parents."

They wished their parents would work less and spend more time outdoors with them, the survey added. So this year, why not put away that fancy gown and champagne bottle and plan a memorable New Years Eve party for kids?

Kids Love Activities And Entertainment

Food is less important for kids than it is for adults at New Year’s Eve parties. Eating and drinking may be paramount for adults, but kids are usually more interested in activities and entertainment.

They’d be happier with pizza than a five-course sit-down meal. In fact, many kids like "build your own" food -- like English muffin pizzas, sundaes or tacos. Mini cocktail wieners inside croissants are also a huge hit with kids.

Finger Food And Board Games

Chicken fingers and nachos are kids favorites too, but don’t forget fresh fruits, veggies, cheese and some healthier snacks as well. Sparkling grape juice can be a fun way for kids to toast each other and enjoy some of the more "adult" New Year traditions.

Board games are always a wonderful source of entertainment for a New Years Eve party for kids. For kids ages 12+, the Game of Life, Cranium, Apples to Apples, Pictionary Junior, Quelf and Balderdash can be fun games.

DVD Games

Younger kids may enjoy Candyland, Ants in the Pants, Popomatic Trouble, Operation, Jenga or Clue Junior. The "Scene It" DVD games are gaining in popularity as well, with kid-friendly editions out for Harry Potter, Disney and Nickelodeon.

There are other fun games you can play on your DVD player too, such as Mad Gab Mania, Clue, Deal or No Deal, American Idol, Quip It, Scene It Jr or Kids’ Trivial Pursuit. Active games like Twister, Bop It, Musical Chairs and Hot Potato will keep the energy levels up. Celebrations that include games can keep the revelers entertained all night long!

Make It A Sleepover

Many parents choose to make their New Years Eve party for kids a sleepover as well, so other parents have the opportunity to go out for the night and not worry about picking up the kids and being on the roads with drunk drivers.

Once the ball drops and everyone celebrates the New Year, you may want to put a movie on to get everyone calmed down and ready for bed. The next day, some parents plan fun activities to keep the party going -- bowling, roller/ice skating and a movie matinee are popular ideas.

Once your big event is finished, you’ll undoubtedly feel exhausted. Yet your children will be creating long lasting memories, thanks to your efforts, and they’ll appreciate the time spent with you too.
