New Year’s Eve Holidays Celebrated With Online Messages To Overseas Troops
By Katerina Octanova
After the bar and pub crawls, after the house parties, after
the after party, you may be feeling a little like a degenerate.
You ate too much, you drank too much and your self-indulgence
in all areas was downright deplorable.
Of course, this is what the New Year’s Eve holidays are all about,
aren’t they? Traditionally, there is a lot of eating, drinking
and merry making, yet a lot of New Year resolutions are made by
Americans who want to turn a new leaf in the coming year.
This January 1st would be the perfect opportunity to review your
options and show support for our troops and give a completely
selfless gift to someone in need. After all, the desert can be
a lonely place... and so can the dinner table with the one empty
chair.
Send SMS Messages Of Support
One way to show support for our troops over the New Year’s Eve
holidays is to participate in Operation New Years Eve. This campaign
allows Americans to send text messages of support to the tallest
billboard in New York City’s Times Square, where more than one
million people will see them.
To send a message, just text 94444 and add the word "CARE"
before your message. Standard text rates apply, plus you will
pay an additional 99-cent charge to post your message on the billboard.
Part of the proceeds from that charge will be donated to the Iraq
and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). For more information
or to view the board, visit
www.operationnewyearseve.org.
Send Personalized Messages Online
You can also send thank-you cards at
www.letssaythanks.com.
Children can create postcard greetings with hometown images and
patriotic scenes to send to homesick soldiers stationed overseas
for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays. You
can write a personalized message and choose your favorite card
design.
New Year’s Eve cards can’t soothe the ills of war or replace
a home-cooked meal with family, but it can remind soldiers that
people back home recognize their contributions and appreciate
their sacrifices. Sometimes that little gesture makes all the
difference in the world.
Donate Your Frequent Flyer Miles
Operation Hero Miles is asking for frequent flyer mile donations
to help soldiers on emergency leave get home at the last minute.
Whether someone in the family has died, is sick or a baby is born,
they may face extremely high airline ticket prices from where
they are stationed.
AirTran, Alaska, American, Delta, Pan Am, Southwest and United
have received 140 million miles donated so far, which has sent
5,600 soldiers home and back since the program began. If you travel
a lot and you’d like to issue a show of support for our
troops this New Year’s Eve holidays, then you can visit
www.heromiles.org
for more information on how to donate.
Please note: Prices, events, locations
and packages may change without notice. Please contact travel
agents, service providers, airlines and or websites for the most
current prices and packages.
