New Years Eve Event Planning Tips And Ideas

By Katerina Octanova

Wondering what to do this New Year’s Eve? Well, you are not alone. Countless other Americans are paralyzed with indecision at this very moment, wondering what fun awaits them in the city this fine night.

The key to a happy and stress-free New Years Eve event seems to be forethought and planning. If you just decide to throw on your best party outfit and hit the town with no real plan in mind, then you’re going to be grossly disappointed.

The lineups, the cover charges, the drink prices and the crowds can really be aggravating. However, if you review your options and plan in advance when you purchase a fireworks cruise ticket or plot your own pub crawl, then you can actually have a lot of fun.

The Fireworks Cruise

One type of New Years Eve event is the fireworks cruise. This type of celebration is especially popular in New York City, Chicago, Miami, Boston, New Orleans, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

On a harbor cruise, you’ll be treated to the best view of the fireworks, bar none, and you’ll receive a sumptuous meal -- not to mention, enjoy shorter lines for drinks in a more intimate setting.

Champagne Toasting At Midnight

For instance, Mystic Blue Cruises in Chicago offers butler-passed hors d’oeuvres, a holiday food station, open premium bar, champagne toasting at midnight, DJ entertainment, a photo for each couple and a view of the fireworks for $145 all-inclusive.

In New York City, prices range from $120 to $350 for dinner, drinks, entertainment, fireworks and cruising. If you really want to go top-of-the-line, you may want to plan your vacation on a large cruise liner for New Years.

Last year, couples could take a four-night Bahamas cruise on Norwegian Sky for just $479, a four-night Carnival cruise to Cozumel, Mexico for $529 or a five-night Thailand cruise on Royal Caribbean for $599.

Black Tie Affair

Another type of New Years Eve event is the black tie affair. There just aren’t enough excuses not to dress up in your Sunday’s Best and head out for a night on the town. You probably have a closet full of nice clothes you’d like to show off and a decent amount of money so the prices won’t be a problem.

Most clubs and events offer VIP-style treatment, which allows you the option of renting your own private table or lounge booth for you and your friends where you will enjoy dinner and private bottles of liquor/mixers or bottles of wine and champagne.

Perhaps you’ll even hire a limo to shuttle you around town for this fancy occasion. These events are extremely popular for New Year’s Eve South Beach parties and New Years Eve San Francisco celebrations.

A House Party

Some people would rather forego the rowdy New Years Eve event, with the hassle of travel, freezing outside in heels, overpaying for drinks and shelling out cash for covers. For the laid-back types, a simple house party will suffice.

There are three ingredients to successful New Years festivities; company, food/drink and entertainment. First, try to feel people out in December to see if anyone is contemplating a New Year’s Eve shindig.

Grab And Go Finger Foods

If not, then you should drop the word to ensure everyone can show up. Second, think grab-and-go finger foods, such as cocktail wieners in mini-croissants, sliced wraps, pulled pork sandwiches, dips, chips, cheeses, raw veggies and anything that can be put on a toothpick or skewer.

Pick up a few bottles of booze -- champagne, vodka, rum, whiskey, wine -- and tell people to bring their own to make sure you don’t run out. Third, stock up on cards and poker chips. Make a few eclectic mixed CDs.

Rent a karaoke machine or ask your friends to bring over their Playstation. Don’t be afraid to bust out the rowdier board games like Cranium, Taboo or Balderdash. Keep a TV on for the ball drop countdown for added ambiance.

Please note: Prices, events, locations and packages may change without notice. Please contact travel agents, service providers, airlines and or websites for the most current prices and packages.

Did You Know This About New Years Eve?

How can I plan a New Years Eve party?
The first step in planning your party is to make up the guest list. Since so many people plan so far in advance for their NYE festivities, you need to make the guest list up as soon as possible. Your next step is to decide a theme for the party and send out invitations. Making invitations is incredibly easy.

You can make them out and send them via "snail" mail or you can send out emails to your friends and family members. Once you have your guest list confirmed then you can start planning the activities and the food that will be served. Are you going to have out of town guests?

If so then you need to make arrangements for them to stay at your house or at a local hotel. You can also decide how big your budget is going to be. Some people spend thousands of dollars on this one night just to have a very lavish party. If a lot of money is simply not in your budget then don’t worry.

You can have a great party that does not break the bank. Once the night gets closer you want to reconfirm with your guests if they are attending and if they are bringing dates or friends. Then all that is left is preparing the food items, the beverages and the games so that everyone has a great time.
