Mothers Day UK Celebrated With Cakes And Flowers
By Jane Kliperrs
Mothers Day UK is celebrated during a different month than Mother’s
Day in the United States. Most Americans assume that all of their
holidays are the same around the world, or at least the same in
English speaking countries.
Mother’s Day history isn’t well known, but knowing the differences
between the celebrations of Mother’s Day in North America and
England is useful information, especially for travelers.
People celebrate Mothers Day UK on a completely different day
from when it is celebrated in America. In the United States, it
is always held on the second Sunday in the month of May; however
in the UK, the Mother’s Day date will fall on the fourth Sunday
in the month of Lent.
Roses, Chrysanthemums And Carnations
The days of Lent are not fixed and so every year the holiday
will be on a different date, not necessarily coinciding with a
calendar month. This involves a bit more calculating to know when
the holiday will occur.
There are some traditions with Mother’s Day in the UK that tend
to be quite specific. Flowers for mothers are given out frequently,
just as in North America, and the top choices tend to be roses
followed by chrysanthemums and carnations.
Baking A Cake For Mum
Sweets are also popular gifts and many children will take the
time to bake an almond cake that is very rich for their mothers.
This kind of cake is often called a Mothering cake in honor of
the person who receives it.
Mother’s Day in the UK has also become very commercialized, just
as in America. The idea of respecting and honoring one’s mother
for the sacrifices and efforts that they have made on their children’s
behalf is still an ideal, but the reality tends to come down to
a store-bought gift.
A Card, Cake And Flowers
Mother’s Day cards are purchased rather than made, and
flowers are an easy purchase as well, yet it is still the aim
of most to review their options and make Mothers Day special.
Mothers Day UK has become as commercialized as Mother’s Day in
the United States. The traditions for Mothering Sunday, or Mother’s
Day in the UK, may still have a strong hold through the Church
of England, with the presenting of flowers for mothers or cakes
that will be eaten on Easter.
But with secular ideas becoming a way of life, both holidays
have now lost their true meaning, including Mothers Day UK. Hopefully,
children will continue to honor their mothers on Mother’s Day
no matter which country they live in, and do so out of love rather
than duty.

Did You Know?
What is a good way to get children to honor this day for their
mother’s?
Most children do not have money of their
own to go buy present for their mother. That is not a problem
though. Mother’s Day is about honoring your mother. Children,
for the most part, are naturally giving and will do things to
help celebrate this special day.
A great way to get your child involved
is to talk about what the day means and offer them ways they can
help. You may have them draw pretty pictures if they are young
and then give them to mom. Another great way to get kids involved
is to give mom the day off. The kids can help cook breakfast or
brunch and let mom rest for the day.
