Mothers Day Celebrations After The Loss Of Your Mother

By Jane Kliperrs

The loss of a mother is difficult, and if it occurs close to Mothers Day celebrations, then it is especially difficult to cope with emotionally. While friends can be supportive, they will be planning to buy Mother’s Day gifts for their own mothers, and hearing of what they’ve chosen can leave you feeling a great sense of loss.

All the stores will be filled with ideas for gifts for mothers, and even shopping during this time can be painful. Rather than avoiding celebrations or anything related to this one day, it is a time for you to reflect upon your own mother’s life and all that she did that was good.

Honor Your Mother And Reflect Upon Happy Memories

Remembering your mother and honoring her after her death can be difficult with all the Mothers Day celebrations that surround you. The first Mother’s Day without your mother is usually the most difficult one, but you can review your options and ease your grief by visiting her grave and sitting and talking to her for a period of time.

Also you can keep this Mothers Day special by attending a church service or even going someplace quiet to sit and reflect upon all the things that your mother did for you and focus on all the special memories that you have of her.

Make A Donation In Memory Of Your Mother

Mother’s day celebrations can still be spent giving Mother’s Day gifts, but the recipient will be someone else. Consider making a donation in her memory to an organization that she always supported, or to a group that represents the values that she held.

If you do not have the money for that gesture, you could instead volunteer your time at such an organization, and spend the day helping out others who could benefit from your actions.

Doing Something Your Mum Taught You

You can also skip all the commercial Mother’s Day celebrations and instead choose to spend the day honoring your mother’s memory by doing something that she taught you or that she enjoyed.

For example, if she taught you how to play an instrument, then you could spend some time playing some music that she might have enjoyed. If she was instrumental in developing a love for cooking in you, then preparing a lavish meal might be a Mothers Day gift that you could pass on to someone else, while at the same time remembering your own mother.

Make It A Joyous Occasion

When the woman who gave birth to you is no longer around, Mothers Day celebrations become a time of reflection. If you are married and your spouse’s mother is still alive, then you can still make Mothers Day special for her.

But even if not, this is a day that can be spent remembering your mother and what she meant to you and how she shaped you into the person you are today. This may not be a joyous occasion for you, but it can certainly be bittersweet.

Did You Know?

Think about everything your mother has done for you during your life. Even if she is not biologically related to you, she helped shape who you are today. So it is only natural that you want to honor her on a special day.

Mother’s Day is a day set aside to honor that special woman in your life that has given you so much. But how much do you know about this day? It really does have a unique and special history. The more you know about this day, the better you can celebrate.
