Making Baby Food With Easy To Cook Ingredients

By Julia Taylor-Fernandez

Many parents opt for store bought baby food primarily because it’s quick and convenient. However, these processed foods are not as nutritious as homemade baby food and can be full of extra salt, sugar and preservatives.

If you’re looking for alternatives to commercial foods, then organic baby food recipes are easily found online and in cookbooks. In very little time, you can review your options and prepare fresh food for your baby that is packed with nutrition.

When making your infant food recipes, being well prepared with the right tools will save you time in the long run. Instead of using a bulky electric food processor that takes forever to assemble and clean, opt for a hand blender, which is far easier to use and can quickly be cleaned with a little antibacterial soap and hot water.

Use Pre-Cut Veggies As A Time Saver

Some moms also like baby food grinders because they’re portable and work just as well as a food processor. Fresh produce is always your best bet, but if you’re crunched for time, then pre-cut frozen veggies are also good.

Stay away from canned meats and vegetables because they are packed with salt. For vegetables like beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans and potatoes, peel and slice into small pieces so that they’ll cook quickly. Steam them over boiling water or cook in the microwave with a small amount of water.

Ice Cube Trays For Freezing Baby Food

If you’re making your baby’s food in bulk, then you have to store the portions correctly so that they’ll retain freshness and nutrition. Most moms use everyday ice cube trays for freezing baby food.

After it’s frozen, take each cube of food and store it in a sealable food bag in the freezer. Fruits and vegetables can be frozen for up to six months, while meats can be frozen for one to two months.

After each meal, take out your baby’s next meal so it will be defrosted when you need it. Be extra careful when warming food in a microwave. Microwaves can create hot spots in food that will burn your baby’s tender mouth. Also, do not refreeze leftovers. Uneaten baby food mixed with baby saliva breeds bacteria.

Introducing Solids With Banana Oatmeal Cereal

Making baby food that contains bananas is a great time and money saver. Bananas are very inexpensive and don’t have to be cooked. Banana oatmeal cereal is a delicious way of introducing solid foods to baby’s who are 8 months and older.

You’ll need 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1/2 cup of milk or formula, 1/3 cup of whole banana and another 1/4 cup of milk or formula. Combine the oats with a 1/2 cup formula and bring it to a boil.

Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. While the oats are cooking, mash the banana and the 1/4 cup formula. When the oats are cooked, simply mix in the bananas. Make sure that the cereal is cool before serving.

Use Easy To Cook Ingredients

Making baby food doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out process of sterilizing equipment and preparing mountains of ingredients. Busy moms, especially ones who are getting back to work, can prepare a week’s worth of baby food in under an hour.

Use ingredients that don’t need extensive cooking or can be cooked at the same time as the rest of the family’s meals. Freezing the baby food you make is perfectly safe and retains most of the food’s nutrients, so don’t feel that you have to prepare fresh food for every meal.

Look online for quick baby food recipes and rest assured that you’re feeding your baby a healthy diet.
