Kitchen Shelving Helps You See Everything

By Patrick D Kelly

Kitchen shelving makes it easier to see all you need in your kitchen. If you need a slow cooker, then you can see it waiting for you on the open shelf. You do not have to open cupboards and search for it. It is much easier to see everything you need, with open shelves.

You may need to take precautions, to keep everything clean as open shelves may allow your kitchen tools and appliances to gather dust, grease and grime. But, if you know how to keep your kitchen clean, then you should be able to maintain a clean kitchen with open shelves.

You may have a number of cupboards in your kitchen, but rather than pulling out all your cupboards and replace them with open shelves, you may look at placing one or two rows of easy to reach shelves, above your cupboards or next to your cupboards, depending on the current configuration of your kitchen.

Improve Your Decor With Open Kitchen Shelves

Though having closed cupboards in a kitchen is what you see in most homes, some people prefer to have kitchen shelving instead. This might not sound appealing, but don’t knock it until you have seen it.

It gives a kitchen a whole new look, and can be a great way to redecorate where you prepare your food. There are many advantages to having shelves instead of closed cupboards, but there are a few disadvantages to it as well. Think about both before deciding if you would like to have them or not.

Keeping Clean Kitchenware

When you have open kitchen shelving, you do have to worry about things like dust and grease more so than if you used the closed type of cupboard. It might mean a little more time cleaning, and careful consideration as to where to put them.

Grease flies more than you think while you are cooking, and you don’t want it to build up on your kitchenware. You also have to be very neat. The kitchen shelving won’t look good unless you have everything stacked neatly. If you have that one cupboard where you tend to just stuff things, you might not be a good candidate for shelves.

Easy To See Everything You Need In Your Kitchen

On the other side though, there are some great advantages beyond how neat it might look. You don’t have to tell anyone where to find anything, as they can see everything for themselves.

You have easy access to everything, and you never had to worry about banging your head on a door you have left open while preparing meals if you have kitchen shelving. This can make prepping and cooking a meal much easier, and also means getting out and putting away your dishes can be faster as well. If you have a special set of dishes, this is a great way to show them off and to enjoy them while not eating off of them.

Making Decisions About Your Kitchen Shelves

Before you go out to buy kitchen shelving, think about where you want to put them and measure the space. Some have sets that look like regular cupboards with the doors missing. Other’s have self sustaining shelves that are set to size for plates, and some bigger to hold pots and pans.

Look around both in home improvement stores and online to see what you can find and what you might think would look the best in your kitchen. You may even find that kitchen shelving is less expensive than buying a new set of cupboards when it comes time to redo your kitchen.

Open Shelves Make It Easier To Find All You Need

Redoing your kitchen does not mean you have to pull out all your old shelves and cupboards. You may look at adding some open shelves, across the top, and place some of your cooking appliances and tools you do not use all the time. For example, you may use a Chinese wok only once every two months. You can place it on the open shelf and make it easy to reach for it when you need it.

Always take care when reaching for high places in your kitchen. Be conscious of avoiding possible accidents, like kitchen appliances falling on you or slipping and breaking your bones. Many people end up in hospital emergency departments due to accidents in the kitchen, and in other places around the home. You should always take precautions to avoid accidents in your kitchen.

Easier To Work In Your Kitchen

Open shelves in the kitchen allow you to see your kitchen tools, your cooking ingredients and your cleaning tools. You do not have to search for hours for that tiny bottle of hot pepper you want to use in your cooking.

It is much easier to see everything in your kitchen with open kitchen shelving.

Did You Know?

What are the kitchen basics I need?
Kitchen basics that every kitchen should have are pots and pans (in a variety of sizes), measuring cups, measuring spoons, mixing bowls and an assortment of kitchen gadgets that make life easier.

One of these gadgets is a can opener. Being forced to saw off the bottom of a can could take a little of the fervor away from cooking. Also consider keeping whisks, spatulas and tongs as part of your cooking basics.

Another item basic that is used often is a drainer/strainer. These can come in the form of bowls or be part of a boiling pan set. It is used to drain spaghetti water from the pasta or can be used for anything similar.
