Holidays And Thanksgiving Weekend Festivities

By Imogen T Stubbs

In 1621, the Indians and the English settlers enjoyed a feast of venison and wild fowl. In the 1800s, magazine articles detailed Thanksgiving recipes of stuffing, biscuits, gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry and turkey. Following union victories, President Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

As one of the most long-standing American traditions, Thanksgiving holidays and travel have gone hand-in-hand, as we review our options and concoct appropriate arrangements to see our far-flung family members for an extravagant feast.

Where will you go this Thanksgiving? Perhaps you can convince your brothers, sisters and parents to meet up in a central location and party like the pilgrims. Yes, that is a joke, since the pious pilgrims did not, for all intents and purposes, party.

Going To The Most Popular Destination For Thanksgiving

Plymouth, Massachusetts is one of the most popular destinations for Thanksgiving and offers good value. What better place to celebrate Thanksgiving than where the Pilgrims and Indians had their first feast in 1621? Your family can attend one of the many Harvest Dinners, sample New England clam chowder and eat your fill of duck and cheese near the Great Lakes.

America’s Hometown Celebration is well known for its extravagant Thanksgiving Day parade, with replica floats of the Mayflower and a Victorian church. Your family will enjoy concerts, costumed actors, food samplings and festivities all throughout Thanksgiving weekend.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

New York City is another popular Thanksgiving travel destination. Holidays and parades go hand-in-hand, but no Thanksgiving Day parade is more well-known than Macy’s, which attracts 2.5 million people to the streets of New York, and another 44 million tuning in to NBC.

You’ll have to get up early, bundle up and take thermoses of hot apple cider, but your kids will love the balloons, floats, marching bands, clowns and celebrities. There are tons of places offering gourmet turkey dinners, from the upscale Aureole where you can have three courses for $115, to Cucina & Co for a $20 meal. Gallagher’s Steakhouse and the Village Restaurant are other good, mid-range bets.

Thanksgiving Packages Are Available

In addition to eating, you’ll enjoy deep discounts all holiday weekend at the big department stores and boutiques. At www.nycvp.com, you can arrange a Thanksgiving package that includes accommodations close to the parade route, parade party brunch, tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes, Thanksgiving dinner, tickets to a Broadway show and other sightseeing or walking tour add-ons.

Each state has its own celebrations for holidays and the Thanksgiving weekend festivities are some of the best. For instance, Arizona has the Fountain Hills Thanksgiving Day parade and the Arizona Road Racers Thanksgiving Day Classic. Texas has tons of events: ice skating Santas and pyrotechnic acrobats in Dallas, not to mention the big annual NFL football game.

The Wonderland Of Lights

There is the living historical museum displays in Fredericksburg, Thanksgiving sunset safaris in Glen Rose, Youth Rodeo Roping in Sweetwater, religious celebrations in Dallas, the Washington Mutual Thanksgiving parade in Houston on November 24th and the Wonderland of Lights in Marshall. Some families like to spend their Thanksgiving in Minnesota at the Mall of America.

Not only is there an indoor amusement park for kids and a Thanksgiving at Camp Snoopy dinner in Bloomington, but you’ll also be nice and close for Black Friday shopping. The bottom line is that Thanksgiving is about family, so no matter where you end up, it will be a time to remember.
