Healthy Food Products In Food Stores

By Barry J Smallhorn

Healthy food is now available in many food stores, but the supply is rather limited as the prices for healthy food are a little higher and people do not wish to pay more for food. If you look at beyond the prices and realise healthy food is actually rather cheap, when you think about the health consequences of eating food grown using chemicals like pesticides and herbicides.

Most healthy food is certified organic. Check on the label to confirm the healthy food is certified organic. If you are allergic to chemicals in food, then you need to eat organic food. If you are allergic to certain ingredients in food, like nuts and wheat then you should purchase healthy food free from these ingredients.

Do Not Buy Food With Ingredients That May Affect Your Health

You should read the nutritional information on every food product before you buy, to confirm there are no ingredients in the food that will affect your health. If you are not sure, then do not buy the food product.

As stocks for healthy food are rather limited in your average food store, then your efforts may lead to frustration when looking for a healthy food product in a food store.

Frustrated With Food In Grocery Stores

There have been times when I have been so frustrated in the grocery store, I was pretty sure I was going to cry. I have been doing everything I can to help my daughter eat healthy food, and that means reading labels.

I get her natural peanut butter that has no added sugar, and I also buy jelly that is made with Splenda. Though Splenda is not entirely natural, I think it is something in small doses that is better than sugar, at least for those in my family. However, finding other healthy choices is becoming something of a nightmare for me.

Always Read The Nutritional Information Before You Buy A Food Product

There are many packages you will see on the shelves at the store that say they are a healthy food item. Don’t take their word for it. Look at the label. If you do not recognize any term you see, you should not be eating or drinking it.

There are many preservatives out there, and other additives, that are put in foods, and we don’t even know what they are. We just eat them. They could be doing untold harm to our bodies, yet for some reason, we block that out of our minds when looking for healthy food.

Buying Fresh Fruit And Vegetables

If I could shop at a store devoted to healthy food, I would. However, I don’t have that option where I live. That means I have to make the most of what I can get. I do a lot of my shopping around the outside of the grocery store. This means a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, and diary.

I like to cook my own healthy food so I am more aware of what goes into each dish, even though it does take more time out of my day. Most of the stuff in the middle of the store is easy to make, but if you read the labels, you might see why it should be avoided.

Choosing The Right Bread

One important thing to think about with healthy food is the type of bread that you choose. You might think bread is very simple, but if you read the labels, you will find that this is just not so. Even breads made in a grocery store bakery can be filled with things you don’t think belong in a loaf of bread.

You may have to search for some with no preservatives (though some use vinegar for this purpose, and that is fine to have). You may have to replace your bread more often, but if you want only healthy food for your family, you might feel it is a small price to pay.

A New Health Food Store

Though I noticed recently a new shop has opened at the mall and it is a health food store. The first time I was in there, I was there for hours, going through all the healthy food on the shelves, reading the nutritional information on the labels, talking to the staff and seeking advice to make the right choices.

This health food store, also sells organic food, even organic fruit and vegetables. The organic food is a little dearer than food in food stores, but they are rather delicious, as all the natural flavours seem to be there. The last time I ate a tomato, it tasted like rubber. I bought a few organic tomatoes and my salads and meals are now full of flavours that I did not know existed.

Cooking With Organic Ingredients

My daughter thinks I have developed a new zest for cooking delicious meals. But she does not know that I am making the same meals with the same recipes I have always been cooking, but using organic ingredients and healthy food products.

I now go to the health food store every few days to stock up on healthy food.

Did You Know?

What are the kitchen basics I need?
Kitchen basics that every kitchen should have are pots and pans (in a variety of sizes), measuring cups, measuring spoons, mixing bowls and an assortment of kitchen gadgets that make life easier.

One of these gadgets is a can opener. Being forced to saw off the bottom of a can could take a little of the fervor away from cooking. Also consider keeping whisks, spatulas and tongs as part of your cooking basics.

Another item basic that is used often is a drainer/strainer. These can come in the form of bowls or be part of a boiling pan set. It is used to drain spaghetti water from the pasta or can be used for anything similar.
