Healthy Appetizers For Your Salads And Meals

By Julia Taylor-Fernandez

Healthy appetizers are added to vegetables and salads, to make the meal more edible and delicious.

If you are on a dietary plan, then you need to ensure the appetizer is not the high calorie version most widely available. When you are at the food store, check the label for nutrition information and make sure you buy the low calorie version of the appetizer.

Major Mistake

A major mistake is made these days, when some people are on a diet. They avoid major meals and eat salads instead. The mistake is made, when they add a high calorie salad dressing as an appetizer. Then they wonder why the weight never comes off, even though they are on a diet.

If you are on a diet, then review your options and always stick to the low calorie foods and burn off the excess calories with regular exercise.

High Fat Foods

There seems to be a lot of interesting views on what is healthy for the body and what is not. Though we have been told forever that high fat foods are bad for our bodies, many successfully lose weight on Atkins by eating those foods.

Healthy Appetizers From The Shop Or Make Your Own

It is a personal choice for everyone, but the majority wants lower calories and lower fat foods when they review their healthy food options, and want to serve healthy appetizers. These are not hard to come by, and if someone doesn’t want to buy them, they can make them at home. They can also be requested when someone is hosting a special event that is being catered.

Carrot And Celery Sticks

Most people have a hard time with vegetables at one time or another, but almost anyone will eat carrot and celery sticks. These are very healthy and can be served with any type of dip for a casual event healthy appetizer.

A Simple Dip

The dip can be something simple, or it can be something special made. It will depend on what the host is looking for. These healthy appetizers are especially great with kids, as they love to dip things, and they will eat healthier foods if they can eat them in a “fun” way.

Though you can add broccoli or cauliflower to this type of appetizer, not all children will eat them. Adults may though, as they taste really good with some dips.

Shrimp Cocktail

One favorite of the healthy appetizers is the shrimp cocktail. Seafood is very good for any one, and most people love this food. The sauce is usually made with ketchup and horseradish, and because so little is ingested with the shrimp, it’s not a bad addition.

Baked Crab Cakes

Other seafood healthy appetizers might be crab cakes (baked, not fried) or anything made with salmon. These should always be prepared with healthy oils if oil is necessary and baked in the oven when heating or cooking is needed.

Though it might not be easy to serve only healthy appetizers, offering something will give guests the opportunity to eat well. Those watching their weight or what they eat for health reasons, will appreciate there are healthy appetizers available to them when they come.

A Special Menu

Though no one expects a special menu for them when someone entertains, it is always a nice and an appreciated touch they will not soon forget. These don’t have to be fancy, as long as they are a great mix of good taste and great health.

The aim of a healthy appetizer is to make the meal tasty and delicious. Some foods need that kick. There are a number of appetizers that supply the same delicious taste but have less calories than the full calorie version.

So, when you are grocery shopping, always read the label of your food for nutritional information, to see how the food will affect your dietary plan. Especially when it comes to healthy appetizers.

Did You Know?

What is the normal range for a healthy cholesterol level?
The American Heart Association has guidelines established for what is considered a healthy range of cholesterol levels.

A total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL is considered to be a desirable level since it puts you at a lower risk of having heart disease. Here is the trick though. It is not just about total cholesterol.

Your HDL levels should be over 60 mg/dL and your LDL should be lower than 100 mg/dL. Mg/dL means it is measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood.
