Initially, the history of Mothers Day was a celebration of the
women in our lives; the moms, the grandmothers, the mother-in-laws,
the step-moms, the mother of a man’s children.
It was a simple day of saying "thanks" for all it is
that these women do. Yet, over the years, the holiday has become
increasingly commercialized and profitable for a number of retailers.
Some sons, daughters and spouses agonize over what sort of Happy
Mothers Day gift to buy each year, especially since mom is usually
tight-lipped on the matter and not giving up any hints! Let’s
look at what recent Mothers Day present surveys had to say and
then you can review your options.
Flowers And Or A Restaurant Meal Are The Most Popular Gifts For Mom
In 2007, the National Retail Federation polled 7,859 consumers
to find out about their Happy Mothers Day gift spending and buying
habits. They found that, in all, consumers planned to spend about
$15.73 billion on mom.
According to shoppers, 72.4% would buy flowers, 61% would treat
mom to brunch at her favorite restaurant, 37% would buy clothing
and accessories and 32% would buy her jewelry.
Gift Certificates Are Ideal
Nearly all Mothers Day gift ideas included greeting cards. More
than a third of those polled said they’d buy a gift certificate.
Additionally, 29.3% said they’d buy a book; 19.7% said they’d
get her a trip to the spa or beauty salon; 18.5% said they’d buy
gardening tools and 11.3% were looking at electronics or computer
accessories.
NRF President Tracy Mullen concluded, "For mom, it’s the
thought that counts. As people find more creative ways to treat
the women in their lives to something special, retailers of all
types and sizes stand to benefit from Mother’s Day."
Homemade Cards And Handmade Gifts
A survey of 300 women by
www.wishlist.com
found that there is no one "perfect" Mothers Day gift,
that their ideal presents run the gamut from a homemade card to
a new car! The survey found the best gifts were handmade gifts,
jewelry, flowers, spa/massage pampering or a getaway trip.
Moms also said they’d like to be with their family, have dinner
at a nice restaurant, relax and sleep in or take a day trip. Some
moms said they would even love an African safari, a cruise or
a trip to a tropical resort.
The Worst Gifts For Mum
The worst Mothers Day present is, of course, nothing at all;
but second in line is boring household appliances like vacuum
cleaners or can openers. Cooking or cleaning supplies, socks and
ill-fitting clothes are other third terrible Mothers Day gift
ideas.
Flowers for Mothers Day, cards and food are still the top three
gifts purchased for mom, says the National Retail Federation.
The Greeting Card Association says that the Mothers Day card is
the third most popular holiday to send well wishes, following
Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
The Society of American Florists says that Mothers Day is the
second most popular day to purchase flowers, following Christmas.
Of those who purchased flowers as a Happy Mothers Day gift, 40%
chose cut flowers, 37% chose outdoor gardening plants and 22%
chose flowering house-plants. Jewelry, sweets, clothing and spa
gift certificates are other popular Mothers Day gift ideas.
