Happy Halloween With A Party Theme

By Patricia Gorginas

"Trick or treat!" You hear the kids screaming from the porch. You swing open the door to see a Captain America, a Chewbacca, a Dora the Explorer and a lady bug. The kids costumes are all so cute and the Halloween masks are so creepy this year, but something is missing.

It may feel as though you’ve lost the spirit of Halloween and that deep down, you’re just not so excited about this day anymore. Often times, adults forget to do something for themselves and instead look toward Thanksgiving for gratification. Here are some sure-fire ideas that’ll have you shouting "happy Halloween" in no time.

It’s a lot of work, but if you want to have a really great Halloween costume party, then plan months in advance! Perhaps you’ll choose a theme to get started, such as a masquerade, Renaissance vampires, pirates, monsters, 1920s gangsters or any other decorating and costume theme.

A Simple Dinner Of Ghoulish Delights

If it’s your first time, then you might want to host a simple dinner of ghoulish delights, followed by a movie. If you’re looking for something outrageous, then just throw some Halloween drinking games or board games into the mix and watch the party explode with laughter.

Murder mystery parties come in a box that provide suggestions for food, decorations and costume accessories, as well as providing invitations, character booklets, scripts and a CD/DVD with the compelling conclusion for your "whodunnit" mystery. Check out the Bepuzzled brand for the best selection of murder mystery kits.

Read A Ghost Story Or Watch A Scary Movie

What better way to get into the Halloween spirit than to read a ghost story or watch a scary movie? You’ll have a happy Halloween if you check out Stephen King’s "The Shining," which is terrifying, whether you’re reading or watching it. Another more contemporary book of Halloween horror is the "Books of Blood" by Clive Barker or "Night Gallery" by Rod Serling, which is also a great movie.

For more classic stories of suspense, try anything by Edgar Allan Poe, Edith Wharton, Peter Strab or HP Lovecraft. They just don’t make ghost story movies like they used to, do they? "Poltergeist," "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Exorcist" are some of the creepiest movies ever made. "Yeah, yeah, yeah -- been there, done that," you may be saying. If you want some Halloween films that are off the beaten path, then try "Eraserhead," "Carnival of Souls," "Suspiria," "Don’t Look Now" and "Repulsion."

Make Goulash, Pulled Pork Sandwiches Or Meatloaf

Food is such a part of every holiday, so why not cook something up to make a happy Halloween too? Perhaps it’s your holiday tradition to make goulash, pulled pork sandwiches or meatloaf each year as a quick, easy meal before the kids run off to trick or treat.

You may look forward to appetizers like bacon water chestnut rolls, hummus platters, olive puffs, spiced pumpkin seeds, black bean chili, deviled eggs or cornbread muffins. The website www.epicurious.com recommends serving deviled ham, roasted deviled potatoes, deviled fried chicken, black linguine with orange and red peppers, braised short ribs or roasted golden nugget squash for the main entree at a Halloween party.

You’ll find the kids really look forward to pumpkin pie, devil’s food cake, creepy Halloween decorations Jell-O molds and tarantula cookies every year as well. You don’t have to go all-out as you would on Thanksgiving, but adding some sustenance along with all that Halloween candy is a great idea.
