Hanukkah And Christmas With Many Similar Traditions
By Imogen T Stubbs
While Hanukkah and Christmas do have some similarities, they
also have many, many differences. The Christmas holiday was designed
in order to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but has adopted
many traditions over the years.
On the 25th day of the third month of the Hebrew calendar (which
is in late December in the Gregorian calendar), the Jewish people
commemorate the Maccabees revolt and the rededication of the Jerusalem
Temple.
The celebration that commemorates this, is called Hanukkah. It
is also referred to as the Festival of Lights, Feast of Maccabees
or the Feast of Dedication. Hanukkah goes on for eight days and
during the festival, people exchange cards and gifts with each
other and sing songs.
Many Different Traditions
The Jewish people attach a lot of importance to the celebration.
Similar in some ways, Christmas, the Christian holiday, is celebrated
on December 25th.
Both Hanukkah and Christmas have many different traditions associated
with them. One of the traditional items associated with the Hanukkah
holiday is the dreidel, which is a spinning top that is four sided
and has a Hebrew letter inscribed on every side.
In Israel, the letters stand for "A Miracle Happened Here,"
while in America they stand for "A Great Miracle Happened
There."
Special Hanukkah Songs And Special Hanukkah Recipes
During Hanukkah, the people enjoy special Hanukkah songs and
there are special Hanukkah recipes that are popular too, which
are mostly made by deep frying the food in vegetable oil.
Apart from these traditions, another one is playing with the
dreidel, which is a spinning top that is four-sided. The top was
especially popular at a time when Jews were being persecuted for
their faith during the reign of Antiochus.
Jews who gathered to learn the Torah would carry the top and
pretend to be playing with it, if a soldier appeared.
8 Presents For Children Celebrating The Hanukkah
Christmas has its own set of songs and recipes that are used
by many different ways to review the holiday. Many Christmas songs
have become a tradition for many American families. This is one
of the ways that Hanukkah and Christmas are similar.
Children really enjoy the Hanukkah holiday because they receive
8 presents for each day of the Hanukkah festival. Other friends
and families exchange gifts to strengthen their friendship to
each other.
There are many families that celebrate Hanukkah as an alternative
to Christmas since the two holidays occur approximately in the
same time. There are also mixed religious families that celebrate
both Hanukkah and Christmas.
