Gourmet Cooking For Your Dinner Party
By Jane Kliperrs
Gourmet cooking can be easy for the experienced cook, and cooking
gourmet recipes at home requires more skills and knowledge than
needed for average cooking.
Some dishes call for special cooking equipment, although fine
meals can be prepared at home without these special kitchen tools.
To cook a quality gourmet meal, it is important to use high-quality
food products.
Be prepared to pay more for your food products and if you want
a fine meal, then you cannot cut corners in the gourmet kitchen.
You need to review your options and choose the freshest and best
quality food to meet your expectations of a delicious meal.
Food Products And Ingredients To Use In Your Gourmet Cooking
Foods products you can use for gourmet cooking at home can include
crab, caviar, sea bass, marlin, clams, swordfish, filet mignon,
rack of lamb, venison, Cornish hen, vanilla beans, extra virgin
olive oil, porcini mushrooms and shiitaki fungi.
Grocery stores, specialty meat shops, fish stores and green food
chains should stock most of these food products. You should also
include freshly picked herbs from your garden, to improve the
flavour of your meals.
You do not need to spend two hours in the kitchen cooking these
meals, as many gourmet meals can be prepared at home in about
30 minutes.
Always Use Good Quality Cookware
You may not need expensive cookware but you should use good quality
cookware. Cooking with cast iron skillets are a better option
than non-stick frying pans. The coating on non-stick frying pans
is not good for your health.
Avoid aluminum pots and pans (unless they are anodized) as the
metal can leach into food and is therefore a potential health
hazard. If you wish to avoid cast iron pots, you can use stainless
steel pots and pans with a copper bottom as an alternative. In
your kitchen, you should also gather cooking tools and gadgets
that can be found in discount stores, like cooking thermometers
and timers.
Need To Learn New Skills
To start making gourmet meals, you should learn some basic techniques
to gain new basic skills in the kitchen. Once you master these
basic skills, you can then prepare meals using most gourmet recipes
and then begin working with a guide. The basic skills you need
for gourmet cooking are braising, caramelizing, deglazing, roasting,
pan roasting, sautéing, and stewing.
When braising, you are searing the ingredient or browning it
in fat. The ingredient is then placed in a covered pot and cooked
in a liquid over low heat. Sugar and onions are usually caramelized.
You can caramelize sugar by mixing it with water and heating the
mixture until it is golden brown and syrupy. Onions are caramelized
by cooking them slowly until they are golden to deep brown.
Deglazing And Roasting
Deglazing is when pieces of food particles stuck in the pan,
are scraped off and used as ingredients to make a sauce. Roasting
is cooking with dry heat. Pan roasting is a combination of searing
in a pan and dry roasting in the oven.
Sautéing is when the food is browned in a frying pan with a small
amount of oil or fat at high heat. Cooking food in a small amount
of liquid is known as stewing. Once you master these skills, it
will be a lot easier to use gourmet recipes to make better meals
and impress your family or dinner party guests. You can find gourmet
recipes in books and online.
There are also many courses offered in gourmet kitchens for those
who want to learn in a more structured environment and communicate
with other cooks. You will not be surprised to learn, there are
so many classes to learn new skills with gourmet cooking.

Did You Know?
Where are some good places to go for gift ideas?
The consumer culture has made it easy for
people to let other people know what they want, so really it’s
not going to be too difficult to get gift ideas, especially for
special occasions like weddings or the birth of a child.
Many stores have gift registries where
people participating in a celebration such as a wedding can register
for the types of gifts they would like to receive.
For example, a couple soon to be married can go into a store
like Target or Bed, Bath and Beyond and register for household
items that would be helpful as they start their life together.
This registry or wish list process also helps to ensure that guests
of the wedding don’t buy too many of certain items.
You only need so many coffeepots in a house! A number of consumer-oriented
websites have similar tools. For example, Amazon.com will make
suggestions about complementary items or other products you might
view on the website.
