Food Service In Quality Restaurants

By Jennifer Bowers

Food service at many restaurants is quite good. There are some restaurants where the service can be shocking, but this may be rare, as these restaurants do not last long in such a completive industry.

There can be reasons why you do not receive satisfactory food service. It may be a complete menu change, where your favorite meal is no longer available. It may even be new staff, adjusting to a new job, like a new chef, who cooks a different variety of meals. All these reasons may be acceptable for one visit, but if you are not satisfied with the food service over a number of visits, then you should lodge a complaint or look at eating in another restaurant.

Even though another restaurant is much further away from your home. You may have to travel further, but the meal and the service, may be much better. You should always be ready to accept changed circumstances, as many things do not always stay the same.

A lot of changed circumstances can be found out when you are making a booking for a restaurant. You may ask about the menu, the staff, the chef, before you finally make the booking.

Meeting Your Expectations

When you decide to splurge and go out for dinner at a pricey restaurant, you expect good food service, right? You have a right to expect it, but that’s not always the way it works. Your service may have been poor because your food server was having a bad day. Perhaps the server just wasn’t cut out for the job.

That individual won’t last, you can be sure of that. The owner of the restaurant wants happy customers, pleased with both the food and food service. This combination adds up to repeat and loyal customers.

Demanding Customer In A Busy Restaurant Expects Quality Service

However, there are always two sides to every story. Sometimes the customer, wittingly or not, brings a perception of bad food service upon himself, or herself, for that matter. Here are some experiences food servers encounter regularly. See if the shoe fits.

There are some people who go to a restaurant and are so cheap, they cannot bring themselves to leave a tip. They set the stage by being demanding, just as soon as they sit down. Let’s say this is a busy lunch place with great food. This type of customer is not seated for more than a couple of minutes before looking around impatiently, gesturing at the food server with an annoyed look.

Not Leaving A Tip

With a complaint, they order. When the server returns to inquire about the food, this customer usually grumbles, “It’s all right.” When finished with the food, they wave down any server, demanding the check. This gives the impression he’s been waiting forever. He leaves and does not leave a tip. Was it the food service that was bad?

Another version of this customer is the very fussy, nothing-is-quite-right type. They ask for coffee, place their order and wave the server away and start chatting. The server comes by with the coffeepot.

Customer Keeps Changing The Order

“No, thanks, dear. But we would like some water, if you don’t mind.” The wait person returns with the water. “Oh, dear, I’d like more coffee now.” When this person’s crab louie arrives, a look of dismay comes over the customer. “Oh, my, didn’t I tell you I wanted the dressing on the side? I can’t eat this.”

How about the Romeo type of customer? This guy thinks the attractive waitress should be paying more attention to his clever jokes and flirting than with giving good food service to any other patrons.

Regulars Not Satisfied With Service

Granted, you’ll experience poor service every now and then, but consider how you might feel if you were providing the service and your last three customers were the people described above! The above types tend to be regulars!

Just like you, food servers can have bad days. So cut them a break. If they give poor service often, they’ll be gone next time you visit.

Change Of Staff At Your Regular Restaurant

Remember, there may be reasons why you are getting bad service. It may be a brand new menu, the waiter is new and just started tonight, or the regular chef is ill and they are waiting for the contract chef to arrive.

You may have ordered a complex meal and it takes a long time to cook. All these may be acceptable reasons for one visit. But, if you notice the same problems over a number of visits, then you know you need to change your eating place and find a better restaurant.

A Brand New Menu

There are times when a restaurant changes staff, change the menu and even employ a brand new chef. This restaurant may have been your favorite seafood restaurant, but due to change of ownership and a new chef, seafood is no longer available.

You may be disappointed, but you can either try the new menu, or go to a competing restaurant that serves seafood. You may even seek to find out the new restaurant your favorite chef is working.

There are many ways to receive satisfactory food service.
