Fishing Lakes With Clean Healthy Fish
By David Griven
Fishing lakes are all around the world, but the number with clean
healthy fish in them, are fast disappearing. Quite often, you
go fishing in a lake and you can see the pollution floating on
the surface, garbage everywhere. Then you wonder how fish can
survive in such awful conditions.
This why I am hesitant to eat fish caught in fishing lakes. The
fish may contain all the poisons present in the lake. They main
contain mercury, lead, PCBs and all the other pollutants released
into the lake by our industrial society.
We need to review our options and change the way we release hazardous
chemicals into the lakes, rivers and the sea. Maybe, the solution
is not to produce these poisons in the first place. If the pollutants
are not produced, then we will not need to find a place to hide
them in our fishing lakes.
More Fishing Lakes In The Past
I don’t know if my memory is distorted by time, but it seems
to me that there were many more fishing lakes when I was a kid
and there are now.
I don’t remember having to plan out lake fishing trips. I know
that my father and my grandfather handled the details, but I can’t
help but think that it was simply a matter of packing up the fishing
tackle, heading out to the lake, and going to work.
Our fishing trips were always pretty spontaneous and impromptu,
and we went lake fishing all over the state of Michigan.
Don’t get me wrong, some fishing lakes were better than others.
Lake Michigan fishing, for example, was always some of the best,
but you had to know what you were doing.
Needed Excellent Fishing Equipment
You needed excellent fishing equipment and a good deal of strength.
I remember that my dad would always have to help me reel in the
bigger catches for fear of me losing my fishing rod.
When I caught my first lake Michigan fish single–handedly,
it was a big deal in my family. We actually had a party! Nowadays,
fishing lakes are few and far between. I think that part of it
has to do with the popularity of Lake fishing in general.
Introduction Of Non–Native Species
A big fishing lake like Lake Michigan still has plenty to catch,
but some of the smaller lakes have been all fished out. Besides
that, there is the introduction of non–native species.
Between zebra mussels and that weird jumping Chinese fish that
everyone is talking about, I am sure that the local aquaculture
has been messed up.
Pollution In Fishing Lakes
The most tragic thing that has happened to fishing lakes, however,
has to do with pollution. A lot of the time, there are plenty
of fish to catch, but you just can’t get at them.
If you eat many of them, you will get sick or even die. Some
of my favorite fishing lakes now have signs posted that tell you
that it is unsafe to eat fish during certain seasons and that
pregnant women should never eat lake fish.
Biological Magnification
Apparently, biological magnification is worse in the lakes. The
pollution builds up and builds up, concentrating most heavily
towards the high end of the food chain.
That means the big fish – the ones that we catch which like to
eat smaller fish – get the lion’s share of pollutants like lead,
mercury, PCB, And other contaminants. It really is a shame that
we have been so shortsighted!
Hopefully the government can step in and get local companies
to help clean up the pollution in the fishing lakes. There are
some native fish there, but they need to be free of pollution,
so that we do not eat fish with contaminants.
Ocean Fish Far From Land And Human Habitation
I am hoping in the near future, we will be able to go to a river,
fishing lakes or the ocean and catch fish that have clean meat
and are much more delicious than the fish there now. There are
oceans that hold clean fish, where the water is clean and clear
and pollution is almost non–existent. It seems these areas
are only available when they are far from land and human habitation.
It seems mankind has to change its polluting ways so we can catch
healthy fish in clear clean waters in our fishing lakes.

Did You Know?
Have you checked out local restaurant prices for lobster or other
seafood? It can be outrageous and easily run you over $25 dollars
a plate. Buying it frozen in the grocery store is not much
better.
You still have to take it home, thaw it and hope for the best.
If you live inland then you know how hard fresh seafood is to
come by. But rest assured that those days are long over.
You can order your fresh seafood online through many retail stores.
It is caught, packed and shipped directly to your door.
