Fathers Day UK Celebrations With Plenty Of Activities

By Jane Kliperrs

Fathers Day UK celebrations are regarded in much the same way as in the United States, where the first Father's Day took place. In the UK, children honor their fathers with the same Father's Day date -- the third Sunday of June.

It's believed that the people of Ireland, Scotland and England began celebrating after 1924, when Calvin Coolidge announced that Americans would be commemorating fathers annually on that weekend.

Critics say this holiday has been overly commercialized overseas, as well as in the U.S., yet the sentiment behind this day is still what matters most.

Fishing, Golf And Scenic Hikes In The UK

Many Americans are choosing to review their options and take trips to the UK for Father's Day activities and celebrations. In fact, Scotland is becoming one of the top travel destinations because it offers all the luxuries fathers love -- fishing, golf, scenic hikes, castles and Scotch whiskey!

To get there, you can fly by British Airways, EasyJet, BMI or Ryanair. A great central place to stay would be the Glenmorangie House (www.theglenmorangieouse.co.uk), which offers doubles for £330. Take your father to the Glenmorangie Distillery for a tasting of all the finest whiskeys Scotland has to offer.

Next, tour the Dunrobin Castle, play a round of 18-hole championship golf at the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, or go salmon fishing on the river Conon. For more information, go to www.visitscotland.com.

Take Your Dad To The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum

There are many unique ways to enjoy a Fathers Day UK celebration. In the South East, you can take your dad to the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum near Chichester, West Sussex. There he can drive a vintage tractor, shoot a bow and arrow, tour a Tudor Kitchen, learn how to brew beer and even drive a horse-drawn carriage!

Fathers and children can also enjoy free entry to Painshill Park, which is one of the finest 18th century landscapes in Europe -- a perfect place to partake in nature, history and the arts.

Garden Tours, Local Beer Sampling And Organic Farm Tours

The South East of England holds Father's Day special events at Castle Drogo, with garden tours, local beer sampling, tractor rides, organic farm tours and free admission. For more information on events around England, visit www.enjoyengland.com.

With regard to a Fathers Day gift to make, in 2008, Scotland banned the making of Father's Day cards in school "in the interests of sensitivity" for children raised by same-sex couples or single mothers.

Sending A Bad Message To Children

While Family Rights activists call the move "absurd," local authorities and teachers say the decision was based on the need to recognize the "changing pattern of family life." Statistics reveal that 1 in 4 British kids are raised by a lone parent.

The Fathers Day UK card ban has spread to schools in Glasgow, Edinburgh, East Renfrewshire, Dumfries, Galloway and Clackmannshire. Strangely enough, the Mother's Day crafts are still permitted, which has many people troubled.

"I'm astonished at this," says Matt O'Connor, founder of campaign group Fathers For Justice. "It totally undermines the role and significance of fathers whether they are still with the child's mother or not. It also sends out a troubling message to young boys that fathers aren't important."

Did You Know?

When was Father's Day finally recognized as a holiday?
In the United States it was not officially recognized as a holiday until 1966. President Lyndon Johnson made the proclamation that the third Sunday of June would be recognized officially as Father's Day. The legislation for this took quite some time.

If you consider that Sonora Dodd tried to make it official in 1910 you can see that it went through several presidencies and even a speech by a Maine Senator Margaret Smith in 1957 before it became official.
