Fathers Day Gift Ideas From Consumer Surveys
By Jane Kliperrs
Dads are classically some of the hardest people to shop for.
What do you get the guy that has every gadget, every tool, and
everything he needs? By the time Christmas and his birthday roll
around, you’re probably feeling stumped as to what he’d like as
a token of your appreciation.
To make matters worse, he’ll probably offer no suggestions whatsoever
when you ask him what he needs. If mom’s purse-lipped, then you’re
really in trouble for Fathers Day gift ideas!
But wait -- as it turns out, a number of consumer groups have
conducted surveys to find out what other people are buying for
Father’s Day, as well as what gift ideas fathers most prefer.
While you needn’t follow the trends, you may want to review
your options and feel considerably better once you have a few
ideas.
Dinner And Sporting Events On Top Of The List
The June 2009 National Retail Federation survey found that dinner
and sporting events topped the list, with Americans spending a
total of $1.9 billion. Clothing still ranked high as a close second,
with $1.3 billion spent on slacks, ties and socks.
Other popular Fathers Day gift ideas included gift cards ($1.2
billion), electronic goods ($1 billion), books or CDs ($548 million),
home improvement items ($522 million) and sporting goods ($502
million). The average American plans to spend about $90.89 on
gifts for Fathers Day 2010.
Shopping For Gifts
Over a third of shoppers will find their gifts at discount stores
like Wal-Mart or Target. Another third will shop department stores
like Macy’s or JC Penney. Just over a quarter of all shoppers
will visit Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy and other specialty stores.
Others still will shop online (17.9%), at specialty clothing stores
(6.1%) or through catalogs (2.8%).
Now that you know what other people plan to buy for their dads,
you may still be wondering, "What do the fathers themselves
say they truly want?" According to Margo Georgiadis, Chief
Marketing Officer of Discover Financial Services, "Less is
more when it comes to dad. As our survey reveals, he appreciates
the simple things in life."
Receiving A Fathers Day Card
The annual Discover Card Father’s Day Shopping Survey revealed
over a third of all dads preferred sentimental Fathers Day cards
as the #1 present they hoped to receive.
A nice dinner out came in as the second most popular gift request,
with 24% of dads choosing this activity. Additionally, 15% of
dads said they’d like a gift certificate or gift card; 14% said
they hoped to receive a home-cooked meal; and 14% said they’d
like sports or hobby equipment.
Personalized Gift Ideas
There’s often a disconnect between what Fathers Day gift ideas
for men most want and what their offspring or spouses intend to
give. For instance, women and children often think that special
man in their lives will want ties, underwear, socks, barbecue
equipment and sports equipment.
However, only 2-5% of men want any of these items. Instead, they
prefer sentimental, personalized Father’s Day gift ideas. One
in four men would like books, CDs or DVDs, according to www.itsinthestars.com.
Men also like the idea of a special dinner out, electronic gadgets,
pampering, new clothes or a weekend away.

It is a way to remember fathers that have
passed on and even a way to celebrate our founding fathers that
helped establish our nation.
It is a symbiotic holiday with Mother’s
Day. New dads and older dads alike can be honored for everything
that they do and have done to help their children over the years.
