Fathers Day Celebration With A Weekend Getaway
By Jane Kliperrs
Planning a Fathers Day celebration that involves travel can be
stressful, but also rewarding. If you’re a detail-oriented person
who loves to take charge and "wow" an audience, then
you might be up to the task!
If you have siblings or a helpful mother, then you won’t
have to go it alone or pick up the tab yourself. Before you begin
to review your options and planning your Fathers Day in 2012 extravaganza,
be sure to consult dad’s calendar to ensure he’s free
and willing to turn his special day into a special weekend.
You should ideally book this vacation a few months in advance
to get the best rates and assure there’s availability for those
dates.
A Golfing Weekend With Dad
If your dad’s the golfing type, he might love a Fathers Day celebration
at one of the following resorts. The PGA National Resort &
Spa in Palm Beach, Florida offers a "Family Fun Fore All"
promotion, which includes two children and two adult stays for
$99/night, which includes unlimited golf on three professional
courses, discounted meals and spa services, as well as access
to golf clinics.
Another promotion called "The Guys Buddy Trip" runs
for $445/person and includes 18 holes of golf each day, as well
as cart and caddie fees. According to VP of sales and marketing,
James M. Gelfand, "Dad gets to play golf and he doesn’t have
any guilt." These Fathers Day ideas offer a wide range of
activities aside from golf, depending on where you book.
Affordable Activities In Las Vegas
Las Vegas is a popular destination for a Father’s Day party
because it’s so affordable and full of activities to make
Fathers Day 2012 the most exciting yet. Lauren Volchef, director
of marketing at www.lastminutetravel.com,
says she plans to see a spike in bookings for the June 20th weekend.
Last year, Las Vegas Father’s Day special travel accounted for
23% of the site’s bookings. You can watch entertaining shows,
gamble, tour the casinos, hike at Red Rock Canyon, golf and enjoy
fine dining in this thriving city.
Live Music, Local Restaurants And Breweries
The Cannery Casino has been hosting the "Blues, Brews &
BBQs Festival" for eight years now, with live music, as well
as the best of local restaurants and breweries. The Lake Mead
recreational area typically waves all park fees for the weekend,
inviting you to picnic, camp, fish, swim and boat for less.
Perhaps you can catch a wine tasting event at Lake Las Vegas,
a Father’s Day "Scotch and Cigar Experience" at
the Ritz-Carlton, or enjoy a special brunch at Wolfgang Puck’s.

Salmon Fishing In Riggins, Idaho
Best Western’s "You Must Be Trippin" blog recommends
four Fathers Day celebration getaways. The first is a salmon fishing
expedition along the Salmon River in Riggins, Idaho.
In addition to catching sturgeon, salmon and steelhead, you can
also have fun white water rafting or hiking Hells Canyon. A second
way to spend the Fathers Day celebration is to visit Thermopolis,
Wyoming, where you can dig for ancient bones at the Wyoming Dinosaur
Center, visit the impressive Hot Springs national park, sample
buffalo meat at The Safari Club and peruse historic Wild West
shops downtown.
Roller Coasters In Sandusky, Ohio
A third option is to get your thrills at Cedar Point Amusement
Park in Sandusky, Ohio, where you’ll find one of the largest collections
of roller coasters in the country. Lake Erie boating, fishing
and swimming is also nearby.
Lastly, Westport, Connecticut offers sailing, art galleries,
bicycling, golf, horseback riding, jet skiing, scuba diving, swimming
and snorkeling activities that are fun for the whole family.

Did You Know?
What is the history behind Father’s Day?
On June 19th of 1910 a woman by the name
of Sonora Dodd from Spokane, Washington held the very first observance
of Father’s Day in the United States. She recognized a need for
fathers to have their own special day just as mothers have with
Mother’s Day.
With the help of the Spokane Ministerial
association and the YMCA she, and others, wore a red rose to honor
a living father. White roses were worn to remember fathers that
had passed on. She even traveled around the city giving gifts
to fathers that could not get out.
But for a long time a bill was not passed
that put this special day for fathers on the calendar. It was
not until President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the day for the
third Sunday of June in 1966.
