Family Budget Ideas To Reduce Spending

By Frank Russelton

Buying ice to fill a cooler for vacations and barbecues is a waste of hard-earned money. One idea to help save for your family budget, if you’ve got kids, is to review your options, plan ahead and freeze water in empty milk containers that do the trick just as well.

You can go one step further and freeze milk or juice, which will thaw out slowly on longer vacations and stay fresh. Don’t spend money on frozen water from a store when you can make your own.

Paying For Overpriced Hot Dogs At Sporting Events

Do you find yourself buying hot dogs at every ballgame, carnival or other outing at over $2 each? Make a bunch of hot dogs and freeze them. You can usually buy 48 hotdogs and 48 buns for around $10 (you do the math for what you’ll save).

Cook them all on the grill, put them in buns, and then freeze them just like that. You can then take some hot dogs out before you leave, microwave them, and place them in the cooler to eat for when you get there. They’ll taste just as good as the ones at the concession stands!

Freezing Peanut Butter And Jam Sandwiches

Are you tired of spending money on the spontaneous trips to the fast food drive-thru because the kids are hungry? Make some peanut butter and jam sandwiches, and then freeze them.

When you are about to run out the door, you can grab a couple and they’ll be thawed by the time little tummies starts to growl. If you put your frozen sandwiches in a small cooler to eat later on, they’ll act as an ice pack while thawing, keeping drinks cold.

Are you tired of buying so many clothes for kids because outfits become outgrown or the season and fashion change? Cut down on how much clothing you need to buy by cutting pants into shorts when the weather warms up. Usually, pants will no longer fit by winter anyways, and you won’t have to spend extra money on shorts.

Renting Books And DVDs From Your Local Library

One tip to help save for your family budget, never buy books or videos unless they’re on sale or a gift you know will be appreciated over and over. Instead, visit your local library for DVD rentals.

Many libraries have a wide range of books, DVDs in stock. Most libraries make things even easier by allowing you to look up titles online, place a hold on the ones you want, and you can go pick them up. Some libraries even have self-checkouts, which makes rentals even more convenient!

Toys And Expensive Portraits

Never pay full price for sandbox toys again! Instead, go to the thrift store and buy bread pans, dishes, tins… anything you can find that would be fun to scoop or mold. Kids don’t care what they play with, as long as they have something!

You had expensive portraits taken and when you got them home, your little one thought the pictures were the perfect thing to color on. What do you do to save your memories? Spray the pictures with hairspray and wipe with fast yet gentle strokes. The marker ink will come right off.

Leg Warmers For Your Child

Do your child’s pants ride up when you carry your kids in your arms, exposing little legs to the cold? Cut the foot off an adult tube sock and use the tubes as leg warmers.

Not only does this help keep kids warm, you can leave the socks on as extra padding for when toddlers crawl on the floor. However, don’t stop the frugality with leg warmers and save money for your family budget! Keep the foot of the sock and use it for a dusting mitt.
