European Recipes Make A Healthier Alternative
By Corrina. P. Steinz
European recipes can help to increase the variety of meals available
to your family. A number of the recipes, including the popular
Mediterranean style recipes, contain many healthy ingredients.
You may also look at learning to eat the European way, eating
slowly.
By eating slowly you are enjoying your food much more, and spending
more time with your family at the dinner table. Just like many
Europeans do. You can review your options and find European recipes
online, or ask your European friends for their recipes. You may
even visit the many European restaurants around town, including
Italian, French, Greek and Spanish restaurants.
Each restaurant will have different specialties and you may try
a different meal, each time you visit a restaurant, in order to
try the wide range of European meals. You may even visit your
Europeans friends at home, so you can try out their meals at dinner
time. Many of the Americanized meals, like pizza and spaghetti
are already popular with many Americans. But the range of European
meals is much wider than the most popular fare.
Healthy Eating With European Recipes
Let’s face it. Americans are not famous for their healthy diets.
We rely far too much on processed foods, fast foods, fatty foods
and inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables. This may well
be the reason there are a disproportionate number of overweight
people in this country. We eat on the fly and eat too much.
The average person reaches for a soda several times a day. Yes,
the American culture of working long hours and enduring stressful
lifestyles contributes to our poor eating habits. Given that,
what can we do to improve our diets such that we combat illness,
disease and obesity? It all comes down to an attitude about food.
Here’s where we can learn from our European friends.
Eating Meals Slowly And Spending Time Together
One very simple ritual we might all well adopt is that of taking
meals together, using the time spent at the table to kick back,
relax and talk with one another. In Europe, people spend a considerable
amount of time at their noon and evening meals.
Breakfast may be hurried, by European standards, limited to a
half hour of coffee and a pastry before bustling off for work.
Lunch is a more extended affair, requiring at least an hour and
a half to do the meal justice. Dinner may last for 2-3 hours,
a leisurely end to a trying day.
Eat Less If You Eat Slowly
The advantage of eating slowly is that you tend to eat less.
While conversing with your partners at the table between bites,
your stomach has a chance to apprehend its fullness, well before
you’re stuffed. You also digest your food better and feel relaxed
by meal’s end.
European recipes stress the use of seasonal foods. Not only are
they less expensive than out of season imported produce, but these
foods contain far more nutrients than a canned or frozen product.
Many European recipe cookbooks are organized according to season
rather than the particular food. Fresh is better.
Healthy Mediterranean Style European Recipes
The Mediterranean style European recipes are renowned for their
healthful qualities, using ingredients such as olive oil, fresh
vegetables, fish, fruits and cheeses. Small amounts of such ingredients
are simply combined with rice and pasta and whole grain breads.
Fruit and cheese are commonly served for dessert.
Meals are usually served in courses, with each course served
in modest amounts. This allows you to truly savor each bite, with
a rich variety of tastes and textures to please your palate. The
end result is that by meal’s end, you’re satisfied, having dispelled
the stresses of the day.
If you look through a European recipe book, you’ll readily see
that the dishes are economical, well-seasoned and nutritious.
Hey, start a new thing at your house. Eat in the European style.
You’ll lose some pounds and feel great.
Before You Buy Another Cookbook
Especially when you try the mediterranean style recipes. Before
you buy your cookbook with European recipes, you should visit
a nearby restaurant specializing in European food and try out
the different types of food on the menu. You may try a different
meal every time you go to the restaurant.
You can also look among your European friends, tell them you
are interested in trying out European cuisine. You can ask if
you can come and try out some of their meals at dinner time. Europeans
like to sit altogether at the table and like to include their
family and friends at the dinner table. The more people at the
table, the better.
Once you try out all these different European meals, if there
are any meals you really like, you can request European recipes
from your friends and from the chef at the European restaurant.
With all this knowledge, you will now know the type of cookbook
you need to increase the variety of cooking in your kitchen.

Did You Know?
What are the kitchen basics I need?
Kitchen basics that every kitchen should have are
pots and pans (in a variety of sizes), measuring cups, measuring spoons,
mixing bowls and an assortment of kitchen gadgets that make life easier.
One of these gadgets is a can opener. Being forced to saw off
the bottom of a can could take a little of the fervor away from
cooking. Also consider keeping whisks, spatulas and tongs as part
of your cooking basics.
Another item basic that is used often is a drainer/strainer.
These can come in the form of bowls or be part of a boiling pan
set. It is used to drain spaghetti water from the pasta or can
be used for anything similar.
