Drinking Water For Your Family
By Imogen T Stubbs
You need water to live. It is a fact of life. Our bodies are
made up of water and it helps the body keep its delicate balance
of electrolytes. But are you paying attention to the type of water
you are intaking? Not all drinking waters are the same and some
can be quite harmful to you.
You have probably heard horror stories of travelers venturing
off to a foreign destination, consuming drinking water that is
contaminated and then finding themselves in a hospital with dysentery.
The answer is to find a safe water source or to make sure that
your water is safe to drink.

Safe Drinking Water
Safe water is a delicate balance within nature. It can be completely
clean upstream and five feet down the stream it isn’t fit drinking
water due to contaminants. Should there be a contamination problem,
the local water office will issue a warning that a boil order
is in effect.
You will need to boil all of your drinking and cooking water
for the minimum recommended time, as stated by city officials,
to ensure that you are drinking healthy water.
Water Treatment Plants And Water Purifiers
So how does the water that you drink become safe water? Well,
it goes through water treatment plants and water purifiers to
ensure that no microscopic bacteria are present that will cause
you harm.
Many cities and towns try to utilize biological purification
systems before adding chemicals or other treatments to the water
to ensure that you will not become sick by drinking the water.
Water contamination is serious business, and in North America
stringent water standards are the norm. Gastric problems can be
quite serious for some people who already suffer from a lower
immune system, such as the young or elderly.
Safety Of Your Health
Drinking water is absolutely important to the safety of your
health. You cannot get the required liquids by drinking sodas
and caffeinated beverages all of the time. Water is a necessity
and safe water even more so than anything else.
If you think your water supply has been contaminated or if you
are traveling to a foreign country where the drinking water standards
are questionable, then do yourself a favor and buy sealed bottled
water. Sure it will be a bit of a pain to haul around but it’s
better to be safe than sorry.

Did You Know?
Is well water safe?
Well water can be just as safe as bottled
water or tap water. It will have a different taste though because
all of the impurities such as lime that are found naturally occurring
in water. Some people actually prefer the taste of well water to that
of tap or bottled because of that "hard" water taste.
Unfortunately hard water is really rough on sinks, toilets, bathtubs,
showers and hot water heaters with the lime scale buildup. The
solution is to buy a water purification system and softening system
to remove the impurities.
How does the EPA monitor drinking water?
The EPA has set up analytical tests for local
sanitation offices to run in order to ensure that the drinking
water is free from a certain level of contaminants such as arsenic,
lead and other pollutants.
On a random basis they will come in and
require a water sample so that their team of scientists can check
the water sample for themselves rather than rely on reports mailed
in quarterly by the sanitation department.
