Cooking With Wine For A Much More Delicious Meal

By Barry J Smallhorn

You may have a dinner party coming up and you want to take up cooking with wine. Many gourmet dishes include wine as part of their essential ingredients. Wine is often used as a marinade before cooking.

Wine can also be used as an ingredient in your cooking. For example, wine is often used to deglaze a pan to provide a base for sauces. Wine can also be used at the end of the cooking process. Wine is often added to a sauce, to improve the taste.

Choosing a wine will affect the taste and flavour of your meal, therefore the quality of the wine will need to be chosen carefully when cooking with wine.

A Good Quality Wine For A Better Quality Meal

If you want to impress your friends at the dinner party with your cooking, then you need to review your options and choose a good quality wine as an ingredient. A poor quality and a bad tasting wine, will create a poor quality meal and will leave a bad impression at the dinner party. You do not need to buy an expensive wine to create a delicious meal, as there are moderately priced wines that are of excellent quality.

Avoid "cooking wines" as they are often of poor quality and often contain added salt. It may be better to leave the wine out altogether, if all you have is cooking wine. Your better option is to run to the wine store and get a nice of bottle of quality wine.

Experiment With Different Types Of Wines

You can experiment with different types of wine to find the wine that brings out the perfect flavour. For example, Sauvignon has a herbal flavour, Zinfandel has a berry flavor and Chardonnay is more like a buttery wine.

While experimenting with different wines, you may find red wines work beautifully with a meat dish, while white wines work really well with other dishes. Trial and error will help you gain experience to know which wines work best for your dishes.

Fortified Wines Have Higher Alcohol Content

Most people use either red or white wines in cooking, but you can use other types of wines like sherry, port, and vermouth. They are classified as fortified wine, as they are manufactured with an extra grain spirit, as a result contain a higher alcohol content.

When shopping for these fortified wines at the wine store, you may notice sherry, port, and vermouth are divided into different groups according to their sweetness. While experimenting with these wines, take care not to use the wrong wine in a recipe.

Use The Right Wine For The Recipe

If the recipe asks for a sweet sherry, then do not use a dry sherry, as it may change the taste of the meal with a distinctive and intense flavour. This should be borne in mind when using these wines in the kitchen.

Vermouth is made with the addition of herbs and spices and therefore has a special flavor. As you are cooking, the alcohol evaporates, and the taste of wine concentrates, increasing the flavour for a delicious meal.

Evaporation Of Alcohol During Cooking

Alcohol evaporates when cooking temperatures reach 172 degrees Fahrenheit. But, not all wine is evaporated during the cooking process and most recipes do not require wine in large quantities. Therefore, there should be a reduced amount of alcohol left, by the time the dish is served.

One should follow the recipe carefully and not put too much wine while cooking the dish. If you see the recipe has a high wine content, then you can reduce the amount of wine. Trial and error, will help to improve your cooking with wine.
