Cooking In Bulk Helps To Save Time And Effort
By Frank Russelton
Cooking is a task in itself and plenty of people get tired of
it, losing interest or not knowing what to make.
Cooking in bulk can be a fantastic way to save money, time, and
stress, and you’ll be able to come home from work, pop something
in the oven and not have to worry about starting a second shift
of jobs around the home. You’ll also get to choose when you want
to cook and prepare meals ahead of time.
Tips For Bulk Shopping And Cooking
Plan your meals and cooking in bulk, around what’s on sale at
grocery stores in your area. Compare prices and try to select
a meal menu that revolves around low prices.
Don’t go out of your way to get one sale item at a different
store (unless it’s a rock-bottom bargain), but rather do your
shopping at two stores that will offer you a good combination
of sale prices to reduce costs overall. Also, check out pricing
at warehouse stores or clubs and see if the cost of food isn’t
lower than the grocery store you usually shop at.
Combining Similar Steps In Recipes To Save Time
Look over the recipes you have chosen and find all the similar
steps to combine them. For example, find all of steps that include
the onions that need to be cut up and do the chopping at once.
Do the same with sauces, dough, and anything that is similar.
Cook, cut and separate any meat that is used in multiple recipes.
Let the food cool, then prepare each meal and cook as many in
the oven together as you can. Keep cooking until all food is done.
Use The Right Storage Containers
You can store the meals however you would like; just make sure
whatever you use for storage containers is meant for the freezer
(i.e.: Ziploc freezer bags) so that your food doesn’t get frostbite.
You can also store food in freezer containers or glass dishes.
Make sure you label the food and put the reheating instructions
on the label as well (you can tape a piece of paper to the container
or bag). When you decide to eat a meal, take the meal out, defrost
and cook or reheat in the oven. It’s that easy!
Spread Your Preparation, Cooking And Storage Over A Number Of
Days
There are many places you can find more information and some
great recipes for bulk cooking, such as the internet or at your
local library or book store. You can usually find recipes on the
internet using the keywords "OAMC"- Once a Month Cooking
and Bulk Cooking.
Keep in mind that the preparation, cooking, and storage doesn’t
have to all happen on the same day; it can be spread out over
three days. Just remember to throw something in the crock pot
for dinner that day as you will be tired; it is a little bit of
work to cook in bulk.
Better yet, get the whole family involved in preparation; have
your husband or mother cut the onions and the kids prepare the
dough or sauce while you conquer another part. Make cooking in
bulk an enjoyable tradition and save money and sanity at the same
time!

Did You Know?
Are there certain ingredients that I should always keep on hand?
The standard staples of the kitchen vary according
to what the chef cooks. The basic staples are; flour, sugar, salt, pepper,
butter (or margarine), oil, eggs and milk.
The more experienced chef might keep a wider variety of spices
and ingredients on hand at all times. If you are a beginner, buy
what you need as you come across recipes. This will save you time
and money.
