The Best Cookbooks

By Frank Russelton

If you love to cook then there is a high probability that you have more than just a few cookbooks. The cookbooks available in bookshelves are as wide and varied as our tastes are.

There are 30 Minute Meals from Rachel Ray, there are recipe collections from famous chefs such as Anthony Bourdain that show us the delicacies served in foreign countries. The possibilities for a cookbook are endless and so seems our fascination with collecting them.

What is the secret behind our fascination with cookbooks? Perhaps it is the eye catching pictures of delicious dishes prepared and pictured so elegantly within its pages. The idea that we too can create sumptuous masterpieces of culinary art worthy of praise from our friends and family is what draws us into the kitchen.

The options are endless when it comes to cookbooks. Every ethnic group has a cookbook celebrating their favorite dishes. World recipes at the turn of a page are ours for the trying.

Recipes For Fundraising

Sometimes the most interesting cookbooks come from our neighbors. Many local organizations use recipes as a way to raise money for a foundation, cause or their organization. They feature local community members contributing recipes that are tried and true favorites at their homes.

The upside is having recipes featuring ingredients found locally but the downside may be that there is not a recipe for that exotic hamburger using black truffles and asparagus.

A Great Gift For Newlyweds

If you are looking for a great gift for newlyweds, consider giving them a cookbook that has pages to write in family recipes. You can give them a gift that will be of great use in the years to come.

Cookbooks for children are a great way to get kids interested in food. Picky eaters are more likely to try something new if they have a hand in creating the dish themselves.

If you are a fledgling in the kitchen, consider purchasing a cookbook that offers a variety of recipes. Betty Crocker has been producing cookbooks for generations and is one of the most popular books for cooks of any level.

Look For Tips At The Front Of The Book

An additional bonus is the tips, cooking equipment needed and conversion charts found in the front. There are a few things to look for in a good cookbook, regardless of the cuisine. The first should be a sturdy cover and spine. The second should be pages that can withstand heavy wear and tear.

If you have a small kitchen or limited storage space, collecting a huge assortment of world recipes in cookbooks may not work well for you. There are solutions, though. Consider keeping recipes on your computer.

You can type up a recipe, save it and store it digitally.

Did You Know?

What is an appropriate age to begin teaching children how to cook?
As soon as a child can learn simple commands, safety rules and understands how to grasp utensils, they can learn to cook. Experts agree that children should be no younger than nine when handling sharp utensils and should always have adult supervision. Accidents can happen very quickly in the kitchen.

It has been proven time and time again that children learn through imitation. Buy your child a play cooking set. Let them "pretend" too cook their favorite dishes on using plastic play sets and a play stove. Before long they will develop a love that is similar to your own.
