Chocolate Chip Cookies Keep Children Happy

By Patricia Gorginas

It has been proven through research over the years that one of the best ways to trigger memories is with favorite smells that evoke thoughts of favorite foods and good times from childhood.

Something as simple as smelling a batch of fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies can be enough to bring any number of happy memories of treasured times with family and friends flooding back and momentarily conveying them back to their younger days.

Indeed, it is no mistake that one would associate wonderful memories of youth and carefree times with the warm, inviting aromas that are part of the experience of enjoying cookies made with chocolate chips that are fresh out of the oven. This is an experience common to so many children, of so many generations, and is an experience that seems to embody many aspects of childhood for so many people.

The Enveloping Aroma Of Soft And Warm Cookies

Most of the time, it is more than just the enveloping aroma of those soft and warm cookies, brimming with enough dark chocolate chips that they simply begin melting into one another, while the surrounding dough slowing turns to that glorious golden brown. There is often a great deal more that comes along with memories of homemade chocolate chip cookies, and just an ever so faint whiff can bring those memories to the forefront of the mind.

Who doesn't remember the incredible feeling of excitement while watching mom finish mixing the cookie dough batter, hoping that she'll add some extra dark or even white chocolate chips, more than the recipe calls for, and add some of those wonderful, chopped nuts as well? Maybe the memory that rushes back is that of the anticipation that strikes once the pan of cookies has been carefully placed in the oven.

Childhood Memories Of Waiting For The Cookies

As a child, how many times did you push the little white button on the oven that trigged the light, allowing you to see the progression of those cookies as they swelled and spread across the pan, inching toward each other? No doubt you could already feel that cookie in your hand, still so warm that it wasn't firm enough to hold its shape and just the perfect temperature to simply dissolve the moment you took your first bite.

Often, people have wonderful memories of working alongside mom in the kitchen to whip up a batch of special Christmas cookies to be left as a treat for Santa, to say thank you and to give him a boost of energy. Others have memories of coming home after school and knowing the instant they opened the door and were greeted by a promising perfume of warm cookies that a special treat would be their reward for finishing their homework quickly.

Chocolate Chip Cookies Fresh From The Oven

While you can find a myriad of different kinds of chocolate treats from around the globe to imbibe in, from gourmet truffles, to Belgian chocolates, to scrumptious boxed chocolates, there are countless people who hold the chocolate chip cookie to be the most favored and precious of chocolate indulgences, especially when they come right from the oven; soft and warm and delightful.

Not only are these wonderful cookies filled with special ingredients, such as the chips, nuts and other flavorful additions, but they are most often filled with the memories of wonderful times past and the promise of many more good times to come in the future.

Did You Know?

How is milk chocolate made?
The process for developing milk chocolate is very similar to that of any other type of bar or treat. The cacao beans are harvested and allowed to ferment to bring out their "chocolately" taste.

They are then spread out and allowed to quickly dry. During the milling process the shells are removed from the cacao bean and nibs are produced. These nibs are then continuously ground down and heated to make them a smooth consistency. In order to get the milk chocolate, cocoa butter and liquor is added along side milk and sugar. The process must be continuously heated and then cooled in order to temper the mixture.

Tempering reduces the large sugar crystals and allows the finished product to be smooth and break evenly rather than crumble. It is important to note that there are less health advantages in milk chocolate compared with dark. With less cocoa butter and liquor added, the antioxidant effects are diminished somewhat.
