Camping Food For The Great Outdoors

By Ginger O’Riley

Camping food should always be taken on family trips to feed your family. If you are in the middle of nowhere, far away from civilization, then you need not go hungry for lack of food. You can enjoy nature, taking part on a mountain hike, but when you get back to base, there will always be food to replenish your hunger and thirst.

You may make allowances to stop at a restaurant or a truck stop, but you should always have more than enough camping food to feed your family. Preparation is the most important element of your tip.

Take Enough Food For Your Trip

You need to review your options and think of all your requirements prior to hitting the road, and meeting all your potential needs will result in a successful trip. If you do not take enough food and there are no restaurants for miles, you may spend hours feeling hungry and thirsty.

This is not a way to enjoy a fun activity.

Camping To Experience The Fun

Camping should be a fun activity, but if you take the wrong type of food or you run out, it’s not going to be as much fun as it should be. I have been camping many times and it seems that we always ran out of camping food or we had forgotten to take something with us.

Luckily for us, we never were far from a store. Some, however, are not that lucky. Thinking about the food and what you need before you buy are good ideas and can save you a lot of trouble.

The first year we went camping I took all of the wrong things, or perhaps I should say they were the right things used in the wrong order. We went for three days, and I took hamburger patties with us as part of our camping food. We should have used them up the first day or two, but we saved them for the third night.

Far From Civilization

That was not smart. Our cooler was not as good as it should have been, and the hamburger wasn’t looking too good. We decided not to eat it. Had we been further from civilization, we would not have had dinner that night.

The next year I thought I did better with the camping food, but I forgot butter. Sometimes you don’t realize how important things like butter, ketchup, and mustard are until you have forgotten them.

High Prices For Camping Food From Camping Stores

I went to the camp store to get more, but they, like most camping supply stores, charge a lot for their camping food. I had to pay two dollars for a single stick of butter. I was not happy about it, but at least I finally had my butter.

Though perishable camping food items are okay, only have them for the first few nights unless you have refrigeration. They do okay in really nice coolers for a day or two, but after that, they are probably not going to be any good.

Take More Than You Think You Will Need

You should make sure you take a lot of things that can last without the cooler or the refrigerator when you are thinking about your camping food. On top of that, you should take more than you think you need.

You may have to share with someone unexpectedly, or you may have forgotten something and you will be short. Having a back up supply is a mighty good idea when camping far from civilization.

Waterproof Cases To Store Your Spare Clothes And Camping Food

Another essential item when camping is waterproof cases, especially if you listen to the forecast for the area, it may rain so you need to have spare clothes. You also need to store some of your extra food in waterproof cases. I always take two or three waterproof cases with me every time I take the family on a camping trip.

There have been more than one occasion where we got sudden rain downpour and all our clothes were drenched and needed a change of clothes from the waterproof cases. You may feel protected inside the car, but when you are out in the open, and you are on a mountain hike, there is nowhere to hide from the elements.

Prepare for the worst, and if its sunny all the time, then you will feel rather lucky. But if the heavens open and you are exposed to the elements, then you know you can go to your waterproof cases for a change of clothes and camping food.

Did You Know?

What are the kitchen basics I need?
Kitchen basics that every kitchen should have are pots and pans (in a variety of sizes), measuring cups, measuring spoons, mixing bowls and an assortment of kitchen gadgets that make life easier.

One of these gadgets is a can opener. Being forced to saw off the bottom of a can could take a little of the fervor away from cooking. Also consider keeping whisks, spatulas and tongs as part of your cooking basics.

Another item basic that is used often is a drainer/strainer. These can come in the form of bowls or be part of a boiling pan set. It is used to drain spaghetti water from the pasta or can be used for anything similar.
