Birthdays Celebrate Milestones

By Jane Kliperrs

Among the many milestones that occur in a person’s life, birthdays are one of the biggest, especially for kids. When asked, many of them will say that their 16th was one of their favorites because it was a "coming of age" event.

With getting older and gaining more privileges, of course that also means more responsibilities as well. The guys are all hoping to get their driver’s license because impressing that special 16 year old girl who is now allowed to date is paramount.

Every Year A Huge Birthday Bash

Obviously, there are other years that are equally important to others. Perhaps the first time a kid hits those "double digits" and is no longer considered a "baby." After that, there are the "tween" years; no longer a child but not quite a teenager. Every year they envision a huge birthday bash with cooler birthday gifts, and these days, a plethora of online greeting cards.

What about the 18th birthday? Did you celebrate it in any specific way or was it just another birthday? For many, this is considered the first step towards adulthood, as there are now many things that they can do that were not allowed before hitting this particular birthday milestone. These birthdays probably do deserve to have something special to commemorate the occasion, such as a big birthday bash dance party with all of your friends.

The Final Step To Adulthood

Another major birthday milestone is the 21st birthday and it is considered to be the final step towards adulthood. There are major benefits that come with the 18th birthday but there is so much more that becomes available once you turn 21. However, there is a great deal more responsibility once this birthday has been reached as well.

If 21 is considered a major milestone, then the 50th birthday is probably the next biggest for some people. This is considered the "over the hill" age, celebrated with black balloons, streamers and an over the hill birthday cake. However, those who have reached this age will argue that they are not over the hill.

Retirement isn’t far off, the kids have moved out of the house (hopefully) and it is their time to relax. These birthdays usually signify a time when moms and dads "get their lives back," and can pursue interests that have been on the back burner for the last 20 or so years. Most adults really look forward to this age with enthusiasm.
